Does anyone else notice that Rogers Cable Internet worsens with temperature? We have the Extreme service and we've noticed that as temperatures drop the Internet speeds start slowing significantly, to the point where this morning the Motorola SB5100 was unable to latch on to a signal?

Yep. I live in Keele/Sheppard @ North York.
The lines get really crappy, lots of disconnects in the winter, lots of power outages too.
Rogers vans are always around my neighbourhood from Dec to Feb._______________

I have cable internet (Not Rogers), haven't noticed it "worsen" since the cold.
Though, the change in temperature does affect hardware (expansion+contraction). If it's a real problem, call them and complain._______________

it's copper wire, shouldn't affect it that much. I mean, I use internet in -50C weather and it still works fine.

Not specifically the cable, but the tally of cable+connections+hardware, which are located outside.

Or maybe more people are using cable when it's cold and so the quality seems to degrade...

Dude, Sheppard and Allen. The HDTV signals have consistant audio dropouts as it gets colder. I bet we could graph drops in temperatures with increases in performance issues.

Dec 15th, 2005 11:57 AM #8Very valid point, though I think that would directly affect bandwidth rather than signal quality.

Yep. Happens all the time and I have new (2 year old) cable wiring to my house. I remember last year a complete cable disconnect (tv + internet) would occur like clockwork each and every time the temperature would drop below -15C. I called Rogers techs who would of course arrive 3 days later and find no fault. They still would not acknowledge that it was the weather that caused this of course.

In terms of the network's physical structure suffering adverse effects, I don't notice a difference.
That said, sometimes there is a difference in terms of load in my area. It's great when it's cold and people are out, and don't want to face the winter chill to get home. It sucks when it's cold and everyone stays in to camp out in front of the Net.

Usually more ppl stay home during winter compare to summer time. therefore higher network usage. In fact if my memory serves me right, the lower the temp the faster electronics can move (i.e. higher transfer rate..)
