Rogers DOCSIS cable modem replacement
Recently got a letter from Rogers saying that they are retiring the older modems and replacing them with DOCSIS modems by March 13.
What's the deal here? I currently use a lot of bittorrent, and while I'm not pleased with the speed (seems to top out at 200k/sec and averages 30-50k/sec), I would hate to see it go out completely or slow down further.
Will this new modem increase or decrease my speed? I installed Rogers high speed in 2002 or 2003 I think.

You should get better overall performance with a Docsis modem.

This is true - the network your old modem operates on is prone to getting congested and boggles down on the speed the more users that are on it. This was why cable modems were such a problem when up/down speeds slowed down during peak hours - the more users in the same neighbourhood that were simultaneously using it the slower it'd get. The newer Docsis network doesn't have this problem and performance speeds all around were even higher than expected.
As an aside fact, Bell Sympatico knew of that congestion problem and exploited it in their hugely successful commercial where the dad having to explain to his son why he bought up all the houses in the neighbourhood to keep their internet fast lol. And there was this one scene with the son chucking a football down an empty street because there were no neighbourhood kids to play with lol... I always got a kick out of that commercial when it used to be true, lol.

I haven't recieve any notice about upgrading them. But I never had problems and speed is always good.

Eventually they'll be enabling the gateways that come with the Rogers' Home Phone service to function as a cable modem as well, so don't buy anything just yet.

You will eventually as the old cable modem system is retired and replaced with DOCSIS in every area.
