I can vouch for how hot those things can get. I am not a rogers customer any more, but still have the old SA box we bought when we were a long time customer. Before HDTVs, we used to have our Rogers box sitting on TOP of our old 27" CRT (very huge so it's not like it was going to fall off). After years and years of use and finally upgrading to an HDTV it came time to switch out the box with an HDPVR and the new TV.
The bottom of the rogers box had MELTED to the top of the CRT tv!
Now one could argue that it could have been a combination of the heat of the TV and the rogers box...but still, these things ROAST.

My thoughts exactly.
Is Rogers going to discount my bill to make up for the seven hundred thousand watts of increased energy usage per year for a couple of HD boxes?
TV boxes are power guzzlers http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/st...r.html?ref=rss
Last post in thread.: "I noticed the Rogers box consumes the same amount whether it is on or off (40watts or so). So I stopped turning it off... since I already had to replace one remote for a new one because the power button stopped working." So 40 watts 24/7 = 350,400 watts consumed in one year.

Just two of those Rogers boxes would consume more energy than our non-energy star fridge. Absolutely ridiculous beyond belief. They must have vacuum tubes in them. No wonder why those things fail so regularly, they must cook themselves to death.

Does this mean everyone that will switch to this digital box will either have to buy It outright from Rogers or take the $3-$5 monthly rental fee right..?

The "free" boxes do not have an off switch. They run 24/7 and have to be activated after installation with Rogers. They come with a universal remote control. I highly doubt they list a code for the Auria TV in the bedroom.
How to install one of these digital transport boxes.

Went to a Rogers Plus store and picked this up:

Now I'm gonna hook it up with my old 27" Mitsubishi CK2606C that is in the basement:

So I connected everything ... and then I get this on the screen:

Knowing that trying to reach one of those losers on the phone ... I decided to use their Rogers Live Chat .. let's wait and see what result I get ..
After waiting on Live Chat for 15 minutes ... I decided to call them ...
What needed to be done was to have one of them people AUTHORIZE ...
Now it is working properly ...Last edited by AV-Fishing; Jan 28th, 2012 at 12:07 PM.

I wish I could drop Rogers but I am not exactly thrilled about other options, be it satellite or online

We're on an old analog plan as well. If they switch this out we'll just cancel it and go OTA. The only thing that could get me to stay with Rogers would be if they match my existing service and plan on a digital box, which I doubt they'd do.

I just came upon this thread and now I'm confused since I'm not really tech savy. I was under the impression that all signals went digital last year with Rogers? I don't have any digital box and only receive basic cable with about 70 channels. My oldest tv is a 26 year old Sony and everything is as usual with no external box needed. Has something changed since I haven't received any letters.
