Yup, the signal that gets recorded to the HD is a bit-for-bit copy of the signal that you get down your cable line.
That's why you can only store 20 hours of HDTV content on the HD.

Rogers HDTV PVR
When recording HD shows to the internal hard drive is the playback quality the same as live hdtv?
I noticed most dvd recorders cannot record hdtv so the rogers pvr seems to be my only choice.

Access to store on computer DVD's
Is there a hack to get the data off the drive, or is it a propriety format that is unusable?

Its proprietary/encrypted.
You can add an external SATA drive to increase your storage capacity, though the same encryption is there, it will not be accessible to your computer.

Just plug in, let it format, and reboot or something to that effect. It'll record each show on whichever drive has more space at that moment.

I got one of these recently.
I got it FREE for 2 years. told them I was switching back from Sat to Cable. They gave me the HD PVR free for two years. You might want to tell them you are considering switching TO sat and see if they'll give you the HD PVR.
BTW, it's a sweet box.
