I thought crtc banned 3 year contracts. How did they get around that?
they didn't make contract on the phone PLAN.
you just have 36 months finance on your phone

- 4 X Koodo $40/8GB plan

Except, it's not actually financing independent of the plan.
If you port out or downgrade your plan you have to pay off the device balance.
They are testing the CRTC, and hopefully will get their knuckles rapped (to the extent CRTC does).
Exactly this. This is like getting financing for your car but if you take your car for service (or car washes!) anywhere other than at the dealer, buy gas from somebody other than their preferred gas station, or use aftermarket parts (say, wiper blades or tires) it counts as defaulting on the loan and the finance company can repossess the car. That would not fly legally. Nor should this.
Friendly reminder: South Street is the second coming of Licks, and Works Burger is a bad ripoff of Red Robin put out by those purveyors of garbage, MTY Group.

Lol prices of all phones gone waaay up! IPhone 7 now costs over $1000!!!
Where are you seeing the iPhone 7 for $1000? It's $650 for the 32 GB model to buy outright...which is more expensive than Apple sells it for ($629) but certainly not $1000.

This, right here, is what 99% of consumers don't understand. Plans previously to everything "tab" were overall cheaper, especially if you took advantage of EPP discounts.
Carriers took the tab opportunity to just raise their base plan cost.
I agree, it was pretty clear that was going to happen, but more customers didn’t see the writing on the wall.

Just because something costs $1000 doesn't mean you need to buy it. I got my one plus 3 for $300 on Kijiji 3 years ago. I got an essential phone as a backup for $300 1.5 years ago. Never paid a dime for an iPhone or Samsung. Never paid a dime in contract fees. All cash up front. It's your own fault for being scammed by the ads.
