Rogers needs 30 days notice to cancel cable?
So I cancel my cable today after a 3hr conversation with their retention dept. and increasing 'deals' that served only to waste my time and piss me off.. and when I was finally able to cancel, they told it it would take 30 days to turn my service off.
Why? What is stopping them from doing it right now? Is there some big, fancy process that I don't know about?
I'll take the stupid box back to the closest Rogers store right now. I don't want cable for another 30 days.. that's why I'm canceling it TODAY!

I'm sure they wouldn't stop you from taking the box back to the store today, and not having cable for the next 30 days. However, you would still have to pay for the service. It is stated in their "contracts/terms and conditions".

It's in their policy that you agreed upon signing up : https://your.rogers.com/about/Billterms.pdf (see: #5)
It's the same for their cellphone services.

How can Teksavvy have a 30 day cancellation policy when it's a prepaid service that runs month-to-month? Next time you get your invoice to pay for the following month, just don't pay it if you want to cancel. What are they going to do? Demand you pay for future service?
Of course I would call them saying I am canceling, instead of just leaving high and dry, but I definitely don't see why they would need 30 days in advance notice.Last edited by BobSagget; Feb 6th, 2012 at 08:21 PM.

From the TekSavvy Terms of Service, looks like they only requires you to cancel 5 days before your monthly renewal date:
https://secure.teksavvy.com/en/termspolicies.asp
CUSTOMER MUST PROVIDE TEKSAVVY A NOTICE OF CANCELLATION 5 DAYS AHEAD OF THE MONTHLY RENEWAL DATE. IF A CONFIRMATION NOTICE HAS NOT BEEN RECEIVED BY CUSTOMER FROM TEKSAVVY FOR THE CANCELLATION, IT WILL BE ASSUMED THE CANCELLATION HAS NOT BEEN RECEIVED. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CUSTOMER TO ENSURE CANCELLATION HAS BEEN RECEIVED. A CANCELLATION NUMBER WILL BE PROVIDED ON RECEIPT OF CANCELLATION FROM TEKSAVVY****

Sadly so they can milk you for an extra 30 days of service. Guess they think that since they're losing you as a customer anyways it's no skin off their nose if you walk away hating them.
This is why it's free OTA TV for me (try to make me give 30 days notice to cancel that!) and PAYG cellphone._______________There's no billing mistakes when you get your TV and phone for free!

Pretty much, standard terms of service for Bell, Rogers and Telus for their home phone, cellphone, cable TV and internet services. It's mostly there to discourage people from leaving by making it harder for them to do so.
Incidentally you only need to give like 2 weeks notice to hydro and gas to close an account and they won't charge you extra._______________

Also within the 30 cancelation period, they like to make calls to you to try to get you back with special deals just for canceling customers. Some are pretty good.
