Yup, just turn encryption on for your BT client and forward 1720 or if that doesn't work, 1755 also works quite well.

Don't bother encrypting - you lose a little bit of speed due to the overhead.

I have the Rogers Extreme service, and I'm in actual Toronto (Bloor and Avenue). I just set up port forwarding, and my top download speed is 726KB/s while upload is at 101KB/s.

Without encryption they would be visible. Just because you aren't being restricted doesn't make it good advice.

Also, for the above, it depends on the client you use that will determine the port to forward. So forwarding the port you said may not do anything for the user. I use Azureus and have it set to use a port in the 60000s, with encryption and am getting 400-500KB/s.

The encryption is done by the client, not the network.

Like TK, I use uTorrent with encryption on and forward a high port through my router and usually see 400k-500k/s total. That's via Rogers High-Speed, not Extreme.

I've stoped ussing encryption as well and my speeds are at the 500-600 range with my upload at 80kb/s

Oh no, I AM restricted over here in the Annex. My torrents were doing a max of 10KB/s from later winter. Only in late spring I finally addressed that issue.

The difference is that I got away with just port forwarding, and not encryption on top. But don't worry, I "was" restricted, too.

i didn't use port 1720 or whatever, just a random port in the 5 digits, plus encryption, which works quite well. usually my torrents' source isn't fast enough anyway, usually 50k/s. Of course, the private trackers and super hot torrents still very fast.

If your under Rogers Extreme, you don't need encryption since the speeds are pretty good without it. Its the people who are on express and under who have the downfall. Right now I'm using Azureus with RC4 encryption to get even over 10k/s so I'm going to wait another year till my contract with them expires then I will switch over. I just hope Sympatico doesn't do something like this soon.

Go with the 1720 port forwarding (mentioned above).

Rogers throttles all ports except a few to prevent users from using excess bandwith. Port 1720 is dedicated to their VOIP service (so i've heard), so they don't throttle that port. I had the same problem with download speeds with torrents and as soon as i set up port forwarding on my router, my speeds sky-rocketed! This will work until Rogers finds a way to throttle that port as well.

i'm sure if you google 'rogers 1720 port forwarding' you will find all the info you need including links to setting up your router.
