How is this different from the old unlocking cost of $13 per month until the end of your subsidized phone contract + $50 fee?

Rogers isn't just going to charge you 90 days + $50 fee to unlock a subsidized phone. And if you're buying a phone outright then why in your sane mind are you buying it directly from Rogers locked and not online (e.g., NCIX) or elsewhere that sells the phone factory unlocked?

That's exactly what they are going to do. And why not? You are still under contract which is after all why you received a subsidy. Locks have absolutely nothing to do with the subsidy.

Phones shouldn't be locked in the first place, and as far as I'm concerned, once my contract is done and my phone is now completely owned by me and not Rogers, it should be illegal for them to continue to maintain their lock on my property.

I'm not. If I have fullfilled my contract committment and repaid my hardware subsidy(or am on the hook to pay it out) then I own the device and should not have to pay anyone to remove "their" lock. It's a money grab on the cell phone providers part.

They don't get credit from me. This isn't a step in the right direction, this is just a way for them to make more money. They probably realize that if they do it this way, more people will use them than other unlocking methods, whereas if they force people to wait 3 years until the contract is over, then many people will have already unlocked their phones.

Their motives are clear and it's to make money, not do the right thing. Phones shouldn't be locked in the first place.

I need to get my Fido Iphone 4 unlocked so I can sell it. No-one has FIDO around here. Very happy with my unlocked Nexus 4 though

From people posting on hofo it sounds like the 90 day unlocking policy is now in effect at Rogers and Fido and applies retroactively.

Yup did it through chat this pm. Took over 1/2 hour ( probably busy). Got a chat person right away but they had to contact the unlocking team though chat and that took time. Needed my account info and IMEI.

Restoring from iTunes now.

As long as it has a Rogers IMEI and has been active on your Rogers account at some point, it is eligible for unlocking.

It's part of the standard script the CSRs read. In pretty sure at least one of the iPhones I had unlocked needed only a reboot.
