Used this last year for topdressing lawn - much better than the Home Depot garden soil.

Can anyone comment on the quality?

Thanks op.

These have fine substances, not much twigs, mostly weed free.
Good for lawn.
Not so good for garden by itself, need to mix with coconut fiber or sand, for roots to breath.
Wait for Rona Liteway Topsoil sale if need for garden.

How do these compare to the more expensive bags such as Scott's that claim to be "guaranteed weed-free"? Are weeds a serious concern with these? Need to topdress and fix the grade in a couple of spots, but have made a lot of effort to get my yard in shape and wouldn't want to use a product that will introduce weeds.

I guess it really depends on the quality of both; but all else being equal I'd recommend top soil

Some people complain about weeds with the cheap bagged topsoils, but I've never had this issue. I use it nearly every year on my lawn, and the areas that i use it, has no noticeable increase in the amount of weeds than anywhere else (actually, probably has less). Just make sure you seed and fertilize when you throw the soil down, so that the grass can start growing ASAP and crowd out any potential weeds that may be introduced from elsewhere in your lawn. I'm very liberal with the amount of seed I distribute each year for this reason. More grass means less weeds.

^ thanks. do you use weed killer?
Yes. I used to use the good stuff from the states, but stopped using it once I had kids since they are constantly playing/crawling on the lawn. I've since switched to the scotts ecosense and spot spray my lawn where required. I buy the concentrate and mix it myself so that I can make it stronger than the direction state. It's not as good as the US stuff, buts its as good as you get here. I'd say it kills maybe 75% on the first application, and what's left over can be finished off with a second application.
