Hey,
Decided to post here to see if anyone could help me out. About a year and a half ago, I purchased a wireless router from Costco to accommodate the extra computer we bought in the house. Brand: Blitzz. For the first couple of months it seemed to work perfectly, bu up until now, for about a year, every now and then the connection seems to just drop. And sometimes it happens 4-5 times a day. There is no bubble pop-up in the corner that has the "Wireless Connection Unavailable", but the internet just seems to stop working. I always have to go unplug the router's power cable, wait a couple of seconds, then plug it back in, and it works within a minute or so. I was wondering if anyone knows why this might be happening or a possible solution to it. The package had a 24/7 customer support line number, but the first time I tried to call the number, I got a message about something to do with the number being disconnected, and I assumed that the company might have gone bankrupt. Im thinking of just picking up a new router or router and usb adapter combo during boxing day, perhaps a TRENDnet or a D-Link. The router is a 54Mbps, it is connected to the modem and to a computer on the main floor via ethernet. One floor higher (here) I am using a usb 2.0 wireless adapter that came with the package. So...any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have you checked their website for updates on firmware? I assume this is the brand that you spoke of: http://www.iblitzz.com/
If you are planning to get a new router, might I suggest the Linksys WRT54G over the DLink or Trendnet._______________

Dec 24th, 2005 04:53 AM #3To me it really depends on experience. Ive had numerous linksys routers and wireless routers and to me, they are quite crap. Ive had to RMA them and pay for shipping myself.

Theres tons of reasons. Is the hard wired comuputer working fine when your wireless stop responding? Coujld be the adapter itself.

Try changing the channels on the router. You're lucky you're not getting drops on the wired connection too...

Dec 24th, 2005 09:20 AM #5Yes, I have previously installed the latest firmware, which was released July 2004.

When we connect the cable modem directly to the computer (thus leaving the second computer connection-less) it works fine without problems.

Also, sorry, but I am not too familiar with networking, so I don't really know how to change the channels. If this will help me, a walkthrough or a link with instructions would be nice

Thanks for both of your responses....still seeking help

If without the router it still drops then it is in fact the router that is at fault - so check that.
Check the Log inside the router, and see if it's rebooting every time you get a drop. Rebooting routers are hard to fix and usually signifies a defective router.
Updating the firmware from the manufacturer's site may help.
I apologize if I have not read your initial post in detail (I still havent since it is too long).

I don't mean to thread-jack here but this is somewhat relevant. I too am considering a purchase of a wireless router but I can't decide whether to get D-Link or Linksys. I realize that the Linksys WRT54G is highly recommended and one of the more popular wireless routers (pre-V5) but I don't know if that justifies paying the extra $30-40 over a D-Link wireless router. Can anyone explain what the benefits of having the Linksys over the D-Link would be?
I should note that the Linksys will cost me $84.41 - $20MIR (WRT54G) while the two D-Link wireless routers will cost $80.49 - $30MIR (DI-624) and $49.44 - $20MIR (DI-524).Last edited by sxz; Dec 24th, 2005 at 10:51 AM.

While CC has free shipping, they're charging $10 for handling!? That's going to cost more than what I originally had...

Do you have cordless phone? If so, monitor if it is dropping the connection when you receive a call.
I had a similar issue with my dlink. I upgraded the firmware and still had less frequent connection drops. I switched off the ringer on the cordless handset and haven't had the issue since then.

Flame me or not, here is another reason Dlink isn't good.
All my telephone sets are 2.4gh, not a single problem with any Linksys I have owned (4 of them).

Dec 24th, 2005 12:01 PM #13I have both. A D-Link Di524 and a couple of WRT54G(S). The D-Link is my main router. I don't mind D-Link but their firmware is limited.

If you have a slow connection problem on Linksys WRT54G, you can use the 3rd party firmware of HyperWRT w Tofu 11. It does a good job.

My main concern is security and the strength of the signal. The WRT54G has WPA2, WEP, and Wireless MAC Filtering while the DI-524 only has WPA, WEP, and is WPA — Wi-Fi Protected Access (WEP with TKIP, MIC, IV Expansion, Shared Key Authentication). Is the WPA on the DI-524 the same as WPA-PSK?
