I've always wondered about this, and I've never been able to test it, since everytime I go, they don't card me. But do they really scan your IDs when they ask for it, or is it just a product of the rumour mill?

well... if they are really suspicious yes.
But most of the time people can tell whats a fake and real ID by looking at it and touching it._______________

Who cares if they scan it or not, if you're purchasing it of legal age with proper ID.

oh man... I would be annoyed if they were doing it for marketing purposes! I am sure that is against privacy rules.....

How does the 'scan' work here?
Does it scan and store the information? Or, it scan to validate if the ID is legit?
There was a complaint a while ago in US. It says the liquore store is doing better than airport security. The complaint is against airport security. It says the liquor store has machine that can really validate different ID from different states. It also shows how many ID they have taken it off from the street by just one store. That was a lot._______________

Can't say the LCBO or Beer Store have ever swiped my ID, I don't even know when the last time was I asked for ID...
If the device is anything like what they use at Casinos, when your card is swiped thru the reader it displays your date of name, date of birth and also in plain text says "AGE: XX" (bold letters and all). It's used to verify the magnetic stripe information against what is printed on the ID. This stops people from using a 'scratched' ID, where the person changes letters/numbers on the card to show a different DOB._______________

min has never been swiped, but i have had mine recorded in the 'log book' the other guy mentioned. I had a friend who worked there and when i asked her wtf that was about, she said it was soemthing to do with being able to prove they were actually checking the id's of some who look younger.
As for scanning it? thankfully i'm old enough now, i shouldn't have to bother presenting my ID, but it would not impress me if they were scanning it. What if you were an alky and wanted to stay that way? somewhere there's probably a record of every drop of alcohol you bought if you've been id'ed for it.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked dolphie for this post.

 I think I'm at the age now where I like getting carded.
But you have a right to privacy. If they asked you your postal code and they typed it in to the cash, that would be fine. But by scanning/swiping your license, they now have access to A LOT more information.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked chococrazy for this post.
