Rusted and seized nuts (2017 Civic LX)

Hey all,

Swapping my wife's tires and the lugs are seized. I had to use my entire body weight with the breaker bar to get the nuts off. I did not over torque, I use the recommended 80lbs. The nuts are showing rust in between the threads. Stupid Honda use open nuts rather than closed.

Anything I can do to prevent them from rusting and seizing? Replace the nuts that are closed?

That's 1 good option, closed lug nuts.
Another suggestion: before you put back on the lug nuts, spray some lubricant on the tire stud. This might help when you change out your tires in the Fall.

Just asked my wife if she had brought her car into Honda for service after I had swapped the tires in December. She said YES and they did brake service (removed them). There's a chance those idiot technicians over torqued the nuts then.

For now I only torqued it to 76lbs (which is still within limits) just in case my wrench is slightly uncalibrated but it should be fine since I got no issues with the rest of my cars.

As said, go with a closed ended nut to keep the water, salt, etc off the stud.

That's pretty lame they're using open wheel nuts now. Accords from 10 years ago with steel wheels used closed wheel nuts.

I don't know it there's much you can do other than clean then wheel studs, and switch to closed wheel nuts. Do not leave lubricant on the nuts or studs, that can lead to the nuts loosening and the wheel falling off.

My old 2005 Civic had both steel wheels and closed nuts. They also replaced the hub caps from the ones that are put on with the nuts to the cheap pressure held ones. Honda is cheaping out.

Don't put too much oil on the studs or else it can lead to over torqing.

grease the lugs and nuts before you put them back...forget oil or wd40 as both will wash off pretty easily through normal weather.. WD40 is good to remove them as its a penetrate..and oil will make the nuts go on easier..but both arent as water resistant as grease is over the long run

Get a wired brush and brush off the rust. Preferably wear a face mask too. Anytime it's overly rusted like that, good to spray with some kind of lubricant. Like liquid wrench or I suppose WD 40. Doing it earlier and letting it soak is also key. Then wipe off, then do the brush. Can clean studs with WD 40 then wipe off. For really clean lug nuts, soak in CLR.

Something to consider. Our 2 vehicles with OEM alloys and steelies both have different lug nuts for alloy and steelies.

neither of these are lubricants..they are penetrates....it means they arent meant to lubricate...only to un-seize

So I contacted Honda parts and they said the reason why they use the open end nuts on the LX (steel rims) is because they're shorter, and won't interfere with the hub cap.

I checked and there is room between the nut/stud and the inner surface of the hub cap, so I asked how much the closed nuts were; $9.39 each!! Uhh.... Frak that... $187.80 plus tax ($212) for all 20.

Guess I'll shop for aftermarket or say Frak it and deal with the current nuts.
