04' Mech. Eng grad here.
- I would recommend that people try to get into co-op or internship. I didn't do it after my 3rd year, and I felt that it made finding a job/competing with people who did difficult after i graduated.
- I would also suggest that the engineers join the Ontario Engineering Competition.
- Ryerson also has a Tri-mentoring program (for all faculties), in which they pair up first year students with 2nd/3rd/4th year students. The goal is to help the student with the transition from high school. As a 4th year student you also get paired up with a Professional Mentor (i.e someone from the industry - likely a ryerson grad). My professional mentor was great; nice guy and really didicated to giving back to Ryerson. I will likely joining this year as a Professional Mentor.

Aug 14th, 2006 12:04 AM #34I would like to know if a RYENG grad compared to, lets say a UofT Eng grad would have any difference as i'm debating whether or not i should try my butt off to see if i can switch uni. I heard from my friend that most employers don't really care about the undergraduate and all engineers must past some engineering society test, which is standard for all engineering programs in order for them to graduate and become a professional engineer?

Aug 14th, 2006 11:31 AM #35the reputation of the school partially helps getting your FIRST job only, but it's not the main criteria. I would hire someone with good experience (from any school) over a top school w/ no experience.

As for subsequent jobs, experience trumps everything, with personality a close second.
When it comes to working, an engineer is an engineer. if the accreditation board says you graduated with a BASC,BEng,whatever, that's enough.
As for that "exam" thing you are thinking about, it's the school that has to make sure they are accredited. You don't have to do anything other than graduate.
And after 4 yrs of work experience, you apply for your P.Eng and voila, you are an engineer (there's a law/ethics test too). and by then, no one cares where you went._______________

I could be wrong, but i think my year was the first to take this test because of the double cohort.

3 other things.
1. Anybody in 2nd or 3rd year civil eng? i have some old text that i can sell.
2. if you are taking the law and ethics for engineers (3rd and 4th year), i recommend that you try and get a copy of the law book, because most of the material you will need to know for your PEng test. As for the ethics part, i never went to class once, studied for 2 hours the night before the final and musta got 85%+. its all common sense.
3. anybody looking for a poker game at school? Theres usually a "friendly"
poker game in the cafeteria. PM me if your interested

OK my timetable is up!
I get off at 1pm on Friday and 11am on Wednesday. Not bad. Of course 2 days I have my courses start @ 8am in the morning which means I have to wake up @ 6am. I am likely going to be skipping those often since most of the time I am too lazy._______________

This whole matrix system was pretty confusing. Never knew that you had to go through registration twice to retrieve your actual schedule and other stuff. But my schedule looks really relaxing, almost a break after every course!
Hope the elective won't be too time consuming =\ Also can anyone recommend me an easy-to-achieve-high-marks elective?

Gooo Ryerson....
Goooooo Bad Scheduling..... Required Course: Friday 6:30pm - 9:30pm.
How come no ones mentioned the Used Book Store on Victoria Street? My apologies if someone did say something and I missed it. I can't recall the address...but it's like a block south of Ryerson on the west side.
I'm a "going into 4th year" ITM co-op. Any questions about ITM and/or co-op I'll be glad to answer.

Currently at my workplace, I'm the only Ryerson grad. But I wouldn't say one school is better than the other. We all learn the same physics, thermo, mechanics, etc etc. I really feel its more about the individual, rather than the school.

Aug 15th, 2006 10:17 PM #45Yeah, from the feedbacks i'm getting, its all about the experience and personality of the person than the diploma itself.
