I am in ITM/BTM and thinking about minoring in Finance. Any advice on how I should decide like I have FIN300 this sem. are future finance courses going to be harder or more straight forward etc. And I have Prof. Scott D. Anderson for FIN300 right now![]()

Even my friends who've graduated say to ignore his lectures and just study the book, especially if its a common exam (as in multiple profs, same exam).
However, if for some reason he changes and isn't like that don't blame me if you fail
What pissed me off was how he was always (as in every single class after the third week) late last year, sometimes 40+ minutes late

If you get past FIN 401, which is an elective for BTM's ... then your in the clear. The rest of the finance electives you have to take after are not as hardcore as FIN 300 and 401. Since you have Anderson for FIN 300, I suggest you take FIN 401 in the winter term with him as well because 1. You'll retain what you need to know for FIN 300 to do well in FIN 401 and 2. His teaching style doesn't change so you'll be used to it when you get to FIN 401.

lol i think we were in the same class cause the TA literally screwed everyone over with her marking. Because she was not an accounting student, she was majoring in something else and just simply helped mark all the midterms according to a guideline. We got absolutely no part marks, only marks you get were if the resulting numbers matched the answers. So one mistake on a question = 7-8 marks gone.
Zathy is not a bad prof per say, her tests are pretty straight forward, no tricky stuff and she's a generous marker. But if you have a TA like we did, watch out cause you'll get screwed over.

yup, that TA pissed off a LOT of people
after midterms were handed back the lineup outside the profs office was over an hour long because of how many people had issues with it
she adding up my marks wrong too so I checked blackboard and saw an awful mark and only 5 days later did I find out there was a 20% discrepancy in the marks on blackboard and what i actually got...
Zathy's not the best prof to learn from, but she's a very nice person.

I am actually taking this class now. It's not Lyryx, it's Wiley and the answer bank for one of the questions is broken. Augh, there goes the chance of getting a 10% unless the profs can do something over the minors errors. It's the first time they are implementing the online homework and it is bound to be vulnerable to errors which is understandable. Nothing we can do, but the recent error is rather minor and it's not like the entire question is broken.
Lyryx is different- it offers questions with the same concept but within every attempt, the numbers and a bit of wording in some cases are different. Sometimes different numbers/wording can change everything so watch out. Lyryx always records the highest attempt. They will tell you what steps were correct and provide feedback over the steps. Even after the deadline is over and your highest attempt was already recorded, you can always come back and redo the questions for practice.
Wiley- for some questions, the values are the same. So even if 3 parts were wrong, the correct numbers will remain the same and will remain unchanged. You only need to fix the incorrect portions until you get perfect and you don't have to redo the entire question (Contrary to Lyryx). However, some questions may change the numbers around after each attempt until a student gets perfect. Once you get perfect, you don't have to attempt it again.
Wiley is like Lyryx in a sense that it records the highest score out of the unlimited attempts within a week. And they are both based on selected textbook questions.
Final should be short answer I think with financial statements, journal entries and some theory/IFRS stuff. I heard someone say that it had a bit of MC and the exam overall was pretty tough. Also, it's much more intense and I can imagine it being harder than 110/410 along the way so manage your time well. I still have to do some extra problems but definitely keep up with the homework and do not get behind otherwise you will be screwed. I am on schedule but the pace is definitely fast so watch out. I remember a finance prof who was a substitute for a class saying that if you are a week behind, just drop. Don't ask anything else.
PS: I heard that 514 is much harsher.
Will take note of the time for sure.
Yikes, thanks for the heads up. Stupid question since it is obvious that the TA marks them but just want to confirm: Does Zathy do her share of marking as well? I better watch out and fight for the partial marks in case that TA marks mine. Shouldn't Zathy tell the TA about the 'correct' way of marking the midterms/final after these incidents?
I will agree that she isn't the best lecturer so far, but she is nice.Last edited by ~SauFung; Sep 22nd, 2010 at 08:57 AM.
