In Ontario you can't import and register a salvaged vehicle period. This is from the RIV. You don't state your location.

Strange, a couple of years ago my parents test drove a vehicle where the dealer said it had never been in an accident. Turned out it was a scam and the car was actually imported from the US and did have a salvage title. I wonder how the dealer got their hands on that car.

They did change the law but I'm not sure when, may have been post Katrina with all the salt water write offs. It's a tricky situation and from what I understand you can essentially import a salvaged car but not its registration. Anyone contemplating doing so should get a letter from RIV, this would have some bearing resolving border and registration disputes.
I'm curious whether your car was registered with the original US paper or whether they used existing Canadian paper from a wreck.

From RIV
Flood Vehicles updated March 1, 2008
* Until now, flood vehicles were reported to the Inter Provincial Records Exchange (IRE) with a vehicle status as: SALVAGE/FLOOD. This status made it possible to have the vehicle repaired and licensed in some jurisdictions in Canada.
* Please be advised that as of April 1, 2008, the RIV will be reporting all flood damaged vehicles to the IRE as: NON REPAIRABLE/FLOOD.
* This means that while it will still be legal to import a flood damaged vehicle into Canada, you will no longer be able to have the vehicle licensed for on road use in ANY jurisdiction in Canada. Most Canadian jurisdictions have had this policy in place since early 2006, following the major hurricane events in the US – for more information see the national CCMTA news release at http://www.ccmta.ca/english/producst...#floodvehicles.
Parts Program
* A vehicle that is cited as admissible on Transport Canada's List of Admissible Vehicles from the United States maybe voluntarily declared at a Canada Border & Service Agency (CBSA) at time of import. Once a Vehicle's intended use is declared as "disassembly for parts" this status cannot be changed. These vehicles can never be licensed.
* A vehicle that is cited as inadmissible on this list must bear a Salvage Certificate of Title to be entered into the Parts Program. Otherwise, the vehicle is deemed inadmissible and cannot enter into Canada as a vehicle or parts.
The complexity of your situation is why I suggest contacting them.

IIRC, this did happen before Katrina. We never actually purchased that car because even before we found out about the salvage scam, it drove like s**t. But I can say for sure the car was originally registered in the US and the salvage certificate was also from the US. When the car was imported the colour was noted as silver, but it was white when my parents test drove it.
OP, sorry of the thread hi-jack.

Why do people even consider buying these cars, honestly?
Good luck ever re-selling it.

There's a couple body shops that LEGITIMATELY do this for a living. All the paperwork and everything is there.
I basically went to them, found a 08 Lexus GS 430 with 5000 miles on it, online that was in an accident. Written off in the state of New Jersey. They imported the car for me, fixed it up. I bought it at less almost 1/4 of what it was selling for here. It's been a little over 1.5 years and the car is just beautiful. No hassle for legal paperwork, nothing. They took care of most of the paperwork, I just handed them over the cash.
If you think you can't re-sell it? I have numerous friends who have bought accident cars and regularly switch cars up every 2-3 years and drive high end luxury vehicles.
People talk a lot of smack, don't get sucked into it.
OP: just have proof of all the repairs done, pictures would always help you in any way

And:

And:
http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/html/reg...s_020376_e.htm
Summary:
....For the purposes of importation there are three (3) type of certificates of title:1) rebuildable, etc., 2) junk, etc., and 3) clear....
...Title indicates - Salvage Vehicles - "rebuildable, repairable, etc." .. - May be entered as a "vehicle"....
.....Title indicates "junk, scrap, parts only, not to be rebuilt, non-rebuildable, non-repairable, etc.". ..Can NOT be entered as a Vehicle...

From work, I was under the impression no salvage cars can be imported as vehicles, and those links seems to confirm that.

i thought a salvage was able to be imported but not put on road, just used for parts.
the above guy who paid a shop to get it in, shop may have fixed and changed VIN #'s which is illegal
as insurance and MTo when plates will see SALVAGE and deny road worthyness immediatly.

Nope, VIN's are the same. I even went far enough to contact the original owner of the car in the states to get all the info. Through the body shop and then to me. As said before, all the legal technicalities of the process were straight forward.
I really don't see what the deal is. The car has been to the MTO and no questions asked. The plates have been checked over and over (my son gets pulled over in the Lexus alot) and still not one word from anyone.
