You cant do much with a 2 mp except 4x6 .

with taxes and alll thats about 300 bucks.

How on earth is 2MP any good? Why would you care if it's a "quality" lens? I use that term "quality" loosely, as leica may use different grade optics for the lower quality point-and-shoot cameras. The end of the day, it's still 2MP, which isn't all that great.

I am an owner of this camera (well, actually an FZ1 flash upgraded to FZ2 firmware) and it is a great little camera. The 2MP "limitation" is mitigated by the great optics and, unless you need to print page-sized images, is quite sufficient for most uses and then some.

I will not go over all its advantages and disadvantages here since I have compiled a FAQ for it. It is somewhat out of date but it gives an idea what it can do with links to all the relevant reviews and galleries so you can judge its quality for yourself.

Still, if you are looking for a stabilized mega-zoom and feel the need for a denser sensor, check the Panasonic FZ5 and FZ20 models.

On the other hand, if you would like to experiment with infra-red photography (with an appropriate filter), none of the newer cameras has the required sensitivity. Also an f/2.8 aperture across the zoom range is nice to have in a compact mega-zoom.

I am not trying to convince anyone here. The FZ2 has been discontinued for a while (superseded by the FZ3 and then the FZ4/FZ5) but try to get over the megapixel envy and evaluate digicams according to your needs instead of just one statistic. This is even more ridiculous than judging vehicles by the horsepower figure alone (when was the last time you saw a 500HP John Deere 9620 on the 401?)

Many people look at these pictures on the computer screen and feel that 2M will not be enough. That is because most computer screen are displaying the images at 10" x 14" (typical monitor size). At that size, and at that brightness, many defects in these pictures become prominent.

However, most printed pictures are 4x6 and few people get enlargements. As far as printed pictures go, 2 megapixel is very good for 5x7 and maybe just about enough for 8x10s. The advantage of 5 or more mpixels is that you can crop and zoom into a picture AFTER the fact, once it is on your computer. After cutting/zooming into a 1/2 of the original picture that was taken, you will still retain 2.5 Mpixs. This can become a very useful for an average photographer.

Most advanced photographers will compose a picture correctly to start with. The 12x optical zoom becomes very useful at that point, and this eliminates the need for future zoom-in of the final picture. For those people, 2 Mpix will be more than enough.

I used to have an Olympus 2100UZ with 10x optical. It was only a 2 megapixel and took far superior pix than the 3 megapixel Canon I had prior to that. You can't judge digicams by megapixels alone. I recently bought an FZ5 and I am very impressed with it. I would recommend friends get the FZ2 rather that 4 or 5 megapixel Fuji or Kodak in a second......but I don't think many would listen.

When you have a great camera with a fantastic Leica lens like the FZ2, taking photos and printing them at 8x10 is no problem. I've done it with my FZ1. It's all in the lens dude.

I'll take my casio 10 megapixel. It plays mp3's, tells the time in 10 time zones and has a day calendar.


Too bad there weren't more cameras like the Nikon Coolpix 800/900. Then all the naysayers about 2MP would be believers.
