Why lie? Your information is easy to find anyway, if he asks for CC now.. then you know it's a scam.

Is This A Scam Quick
Im holding this person on the line right now because im suspecting a scam. Yes... Im typinmg this up while talkiing to someone who i think could be a scammer.
Well, someone from Rogers is calling saying that they're offering me a new free cell phone for being a loyal customer, and they're willing to give me free minutes and unlimited what nots for a while.
Here's the sketchy part. They said they needed my info for verification. But I heard there is a scam where people call pretending to be from a company to get personal info and then use it to call the actual company and impersonate me.
The person (who totally sounds like he's from South Asia) says his name is
- Peter Smith
and he cannot give me his number because he is calling from some kind of private line
So I gave him my name, and my address, but I lied on my phone number and year of birth to see if they really are verifying. But they're not. And he's saying everything is good.
Now, scam or no?
Im telling this guy that i have a call on the other line to hold him up =P
i feel like having some fun with him and lying to him even more.Last edited by Batman.; Mar 12th, 2008 at 07:44 PM.

if your really paranoid.. you can ask for their re-seller number (a lot of the ppl that call selling stuff from "rogers" are actually agents of rogers) and then call the actual rogers CSR line to see if they are legit.

Okay, I just got off the phone, Let me give you the details
I asked for a number I could reach him by, he gave me his name and his work extension number,
then he gave me a 1 866 number. So I told him to hold while I called that number. It doesnt exist.
Then I called Rogers and I asked for Peter Smith + His extension
No such person. I asked if Rogers had any promotion like that, they said no.
So I went back to the person on the phone, told him that the phone is really under my "wifes name" and gave them a random name.

if it was actually rogers who called you all they need to confirm that it is you is your name and postal code. at least thats what they always ask me for and only that info. also from my experiences with reps from any company they have NEVER given their last name

Scam
Tell him you are concerned about fraud over the phone so you want an address where you can send your information.

i usually say no thanks and hang up.
if it's someone claiming to be from a bank, i politely thank them for calling me and tell that for obvious reasons i'd prefer to call the number on the back of my card. so far everyone's been understanding and no scammers.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked jedijome for this post.
