SD Memory Cards
Can anyone recommend a good, cheap, and fast SD/SDHC memory card for the Nikon d40 in 4 or 8 GB?

As long as it's not a completely unknown brand anything is fine. I don't think the D40 can shoot fast enough to have the speed of the card be much of a problem.
I've got a couple of opened but unused 8gb cards for sale if you want.
