any brand is fine. Hell i've been using my slow speed kingmax 1 gb for like a year now, nothing's ever been wrong with it

Can anyone recommend a good, cheap, and fast SD/SDHC memory card for the Nikon d40 in 4 or 8 GB?

personally im using Patriot 8GB Class 6 SDHC that I got for less than $30 early last year on NCIX (when SDHCs were still relatively expensive)
