A Sensible Question on the Nikon Canada DSLR Warranty
A local GTA seller has a Nikon D40 for sale which he said he bought a year ago. When I asked about the warranty, which I know for a fact, should have been 2 years, he responded:
"Sorry, the camera wasn't registered in time, so there is no warranty on it. I don't have any concerns over it's current usability though."
I was wondering if registration is indeed required or if proof of purchase and a warranty card with the serial number will be enough?

This warranty is NON-TRANSFERABLE and applies to the original purchaser of the product from an Authorized Nikon Canada Dealer.

How would Nikon know who is the "original purchaser" since the receipt doesn't have the name of the purchaser (eg. receipt from Futureshop or Bestbuy)

not everyone buys cameras from futureshop. Most camera stores will ask for name for the receipt.

This is BS. Nikon has no idea if the camera has been sitting round an authorized reseller for month, a day or a year. They require a proof of purchase which clearly states what was purchased, who it was purchased from, and when it was purchased. The warranty card does not satisfy enough of those criteria.
When I sold camera equipment, the need to send in the warranty card to register the equipment was no real need at all. Without a proof of purchase, the manufacturer has every right to charge for the repair and always does.
If this was an individual selling it, I would think that the product was procured by means other than buying it through an authorized retailer.

Try to get the seller to agree to help you with any warranty claims should they arise.
Personally, I'd rather buy new since these things are pretty cheap right now ever since the D60 came out. Think the lowest price I found was $400 even.

Yeah, I've contacted two sellers and both don't have papers to show for it. One admitted to purchasing it in the US, the other doesn't have the docs with her.
I will be staying away from these as it just might lead to headaches down the road.

I doubt if any warranty is valid on a used lens or camera. If you can get a very good price on a used item, and it is working fine, its a great deal. If you have problems later on, you can always take it directly to Nikon for servicing. Most repairs are simple, quick and inexpensive.

Years ago, I had issues with a Nikon film camera and it required repair. All Nikon asked was for copy of the bill of sale for warranty coverage.
Getting back to the situation of buying used, I would avoid anyone who does not have proper paperwork. I have sold about 5 cameras now and ALWAYS provide a copy of the bill of sale for their reference.

Just in case something ever happens to my camera, how did you contact Nikon, by internet (RMA), email or telephone for initial contact about problem? Did you take it there directly or parcel it? How long did it take to repair and what was the cost? It's good to know beforehand.
