got this today from Shaw in Edmonton..
I pointed out how the Bell HDPVR is now 199$ at Futureshop. CSR gave me 20$ off the cable bill for 6 months, plus free rental of an HDPVR for 6 months and after 6 months I can:
a) rent it for 20/mo
b) buy it out for 350
c) give it back
The way I calculated it, by saving 20/mo for 6 months and I buy it out for 350 at the end of 6 months it will work out to somewhere around ~250.

The above deal that Gobi got is very good. I have tried getting Shaw to offer a 'rental' type deal a couple of times, but no luck. Congrats.
I did see that Shaw HD-PVR's are on sale for $499 at Futureshop this week, so I went to my local Shaw office and asked if they will match the offer. I was told that Shaw will not price match retailers, ever. Since I wanted to do the Shaw Easypay plan, I asked if they could at least 'sweeten the pot' a little so that I wasn't just losing $100 buying through Shaw.
In the end, they credited my account a full month's service for free (around $85), and extended my free preview for two extra months, so I basically got the box for the same price as the FS sale but with no interest monthly payments of $18. The best that FS and BB can do is 3 months no interest. This might not be a big deal to most, but I didn't want to lay out all that cash at the moment.
Anyway, if you are trying to get an HDPVR for as little as possible and don't want to buy second hand, this seems like a decent deal.

I'm going to try and call Shaw tomorrow, hopefully they can match the $298 deal Bell has. Is $348 still a good price? I asked a representative today and he said my DCT2524 is about a $50 trade-in value towards a HD PVR

Why would you do that when you can call Shaw and they will come to your house, install it at no charge, give you a discount on your bill.. and bill you $350 for the HDPVR six months later? Just add $60 on each of your shaw bills for six months and it's paid for.
I got two for $700 :P_______________

They won't match the price, bell usually wants people to sign up on contracts anyways.
$349
No contracts
Don't pay for six months
No interest
After six months decide if you want to give it back or pay them the $350
If you're on the market for a HD-PVR this seems like a no brainer to me... Now that they're getting this cheap though, expect something with more features and probably a bigger hard drive to come out within a year, but hey, it's electronics..._______________

If you got that deal, good for you, but maybe instead of slagging me you could enlighten us all as to how you got it. Was this a promo, because I've never heard of Shaw just 'giving' people a discount. The "I'm going to cancel if you don't match this offer" trick doesn't always work, and like I said, it didn't for me, so I took this route.

I tried the other day and it didn't work for me. Not the first time I have tried either. They insisted they NEVER give deals on the HDPVR. I have been a good customer for more years that I care to admit, but they wouldn't budge.
I would love to get the deal that you pay $350 in 6 months for it.

Just an FYI. As mentioned previously in this thread, Shaw is offering free HD-PVRs to new customers. A new building opened up next door to mine and alot of the tenants there have taken advantage of the offer. Its happening in Winnipeg, but I cant comment on other cities.

If you'd like me to enlighten you to how I got it, just check the top few posts of mine on page two of this very thread.. What city are you in? That's why I put "confirmed in Calgary".. maybe it's alberta only? or Calgary only? I don't know that part, but all I can tell you is I called Shaw and didnt have to do much for them to offer me that package.

Shaw used to not offer any retention price, looks like they changed this year, maybe because of Telus offering $19.95 high speed and start rolling free Telus TV 3 months
it's not a deal though,
Bell HD-PVR is $299 all the time, sometimes Bell offer for $199. remember though Bell HD-PVR you can hook up to 1 HDTV + 1 SDTV, so technically you saved one cable box
if you buy a new Shaw HD-PVR, they always offer 1 Month Free Preview of ALL Channels including HD Specialty channels, HD-PVR receiver: $348 will not be Motorola 3416, regarding for Programming package: Discount to $39.95 for 6 months, Shaw send out these DM all the time.

The deal is for a brand new, non-refurb Motorola DCT3416... or at least thats what they told me.
I'll admit, Bell has a little bit better picture quality, i've had Bell before and these are the reasons I switched back:
Fastest home internet in Calgary
Ability to bundle my phone, cable tv and internet at a discounted rate all on one bill from one provider.
The ability to plug any of the other TV's like the one in the spare bedroom or the gym into the coax jack on the wall and get all full blown cable without needing to buy extra boxes and switches.
No contracts at all..
I don't want to sound like a Shaw lover since I usually don't like big companies, and maybe things are different in other cities or parts of the country... but there is not one single competitor to them in Calgary that even comes close to being able to offer the package they do...
The only beef I ever had with Shaw was the fact that the HDPVR's were too expensive and they wouldnt do anything for long term customers to get them a better deal.. Now that they were able to do that for me, they would have to screw up really really really bad for me to ever leave...
eheheh unless I was able to get my hands on one of Telus's new fiber optic internet connections that they're testing, 20mbps UP and down :O because that would just be crazy fast
but I don't think that will be happening in the very near future.

I was able to get the HD PVR for $299! I'm going to get it right now

This is what I said
Me - "I want to cancel my cable on September 1st"
Shaw - "Why?"
Me - " I've been looking to upgrade to HD for a very long time and Bell offered me a good deal on a HD PVR for $299"
Shaw - " I'll see what I can do"
*1 minute later*
Shaw - " We can match Bell's offer so we can give you the HD PVR for $299, will you reconsider?"
Me - "Definitely
"
