Shelving help (Rona vs Canadian Tire) - any others? Pictures too!

Checking out some shelving for my basement and garage. For general storage including pantry/garage stuff, etc....

I was thoroughly unimpressed by Home Hardware and Home Depot websites. Thinking about checking out Walmart too. I saw the IKEA shelves for 19.99, but the sale ended last week.

Here's what I found:

i'd go resin since it is easier to clean, won't rust, light and strong. also likely less dusty, just a guess though.

Although those resin shelves are nice, you can't adjust the shelf heights. And they look like they only have 3 shelves which IMO is not enough. I like the wooden shelves sold at Ikea and most other places. They usually allow you to adjust shelf height (maximize space use) and usually come with 4 shelves. Nice thing about the wooden ones are you can screw them together which makes them a little more sturdy.

Had I known about the Ikeas for $20, I'd be getting a few.
Ikea allows you to build a custom set which meets your needs better and it is fairly cheap. They have extra shelves, attachments, different heights, etc.

Those metals ones are not very strong. They will warp or bend over time if you have heavy things on them.

I called ikea alleby bookcases to see if I could get the ones that were on sale from Sept 1-5. They said they were out of stock and to check back in a couple of weeks. Their shelves were a promotion item only (which doesn't explain why they want me to get back in touch with them in a couple of weeks, but oh well!)

I was hunting for basement shelving at some local stores. Stumbled across this shelf at the Brampton Home Depot (Steeles & Kennedy location).

Regular price $49.99, Sale Price $29.95 (40% off). On sale Sat, Sept 16 and Sun, Sept 17 ONLY.

Specs are 18"Dx36"Wx72"H, holds 750lbs total. I picked up 8 of them, and they looked like they had at least 3 or 4 skids worth left. I haven't assembled them yet, so I'm not sure about their quality.

what kind of plastic are the two shelves made out of? Some plastics will fade and show signs of stress over time

Spacemaker is a pain to set up. I bought two (the one with eight shelves) so that I could put my canned goods on them, they took over two hours to put in those fr-----g nuts and bolts. My fingers were killing at the end and so was my back.

I have the plastic ones from walmart. a bit more expensive but two seconds to put together. I think they're up to $32 each but they're a bit wider and deeper than the ones pictured. Then I put everything in those big plastic tubs so it keeps them dust free. I label my bins so I know what's in those bins. one for shoes, one for your winter clothes, another for reject gifts from the in-laws that you can't give away but don't want to display. You get the drift.

Also helps if your basement (or garage ever gets flooded or water leak).

Assembling the spacemaker will make you go bat***** crazy.

I've got 2 of them in my basement and a big resin shelf from home depot. I'd go for another resin shelf personally. It holds up a hell of a lot better.

I personally like the stainless steel shelves at costco, as long as they are sturdy and won't collapse.

Not really cheap, but Canadian Tire has some nice black metal adjustable shelving units.

The shelves themselves are wood, but the frame is all black painted metal. Think it's going for about 80 bucks for one unit. Pricier, but adjustable and very strong. Just don't store wet stuff on it, otherwise the particle board might fall apart.
