When I was researching SSDs for this laptop, I saw several threads where people indicated that SATA SSDs didn't work - it has to be NVMe. I can't confirm from first-hand experience, but I bought an NVMe.Leggo84 wrote: ↑ Would this fit and be good for Y520? This laptop has two drive slots: a 2.5" drive bay that only supports the SATA standard, and an m.2 slot that only supports the PCIe standard. The drives that are incompatible are m.2 format drives that use the SATA standard.
Tldr;
2.5" SATA works (i.e. 860 evo sata)
m.2 PCIe NVMe works i.e. 970 pro m.2)
m.2 SATA does not work (i.e. 850 evo m.2)
