[Best Buy] Infinity Primus P143 Bookshelf Speaker - Bestbuy - $50 ($60 - $100 in US)

I have been looking for budget rear speakers to finish off a 5.1 surround system. Came across these P143's (it's $50 per speaker)

http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/inf ... 52932.aspx

Don't be misled by the $150 savings. These have been $50 before and they seem to go one sale in the States for $50 as well. They are currently at Frys.com for $60 and Amazon.com for $100.

The slightly bigger P153's are also on sale at BB for $80 each, but they apparently have also been on for $50 in the past.

There's not a whole lot of reviews on the P143's, but those I found tended to be favourable.

I was actually planning to pick up a used pair of rears on Kijiji, and found pairs of P143's going for $120. With taxes and enviro fees, a new pair at BB came to $125.

86dB sensitivity, would a small 15W (TA2024s) or 25W (TA2021s) or 50W (TDA7492) Class-D amp be powerful enough to power those?

Absolutely. I'd get a quality 50W as a lot of manufacturers like to overstate what they actually have.

Yeah I just looked at the specsheet of the TDA7492 and 50W is at 10% THD..., to keep it under 0.5%, it has to be under 35W
How loud is it anyway at those wattage?

These Infinity's are not the most efficient speakers, I would recommend a minimum of 50 Watt RMS. Up to you, but I wouldn't risk it.

These sound great, but if you can afford and have space for it, get the 153's, they have a much better range, and sound great. The 143's are a bit weak for my taste, but do sound better than many speakers. My setup sounds huge, I have p363's as fronts, pc351 as a centre, p153's as surround and p143's as rear surrounds. A good sub will make these sound even better, I have an SVS PB-12 NSD, and couldn't be happier. I have a pretty powerful receiver too, better to have more power than you need to protect your investment.

I have P162 in my room and P143 w/ PC250 centre in loft. All are great. For $50 each they're pretty good. PC250 would be the right center to match with the P143. If you buy P162/P163 or P252/P253 + P362/P363 I would get the PC350/PC351 center.

You can get the PC250/PC251 for possibly under $150 on sale at BB. PC350/PC351 also can go for $150 on sale.

I used the PC350 for a week but returned it due to its sheer size.

There is no difference between the "0" and the "1" models except for colors of grille and the faceplate

I have the P252 in boxes in the basement to be used in the future ;)

I've been looking all over for the P160, P162 or P163's. They are nearly impossible to find in Canada!!!

So what I'm gathering is these would best be used for surround speakers in a HT setup.

How would these fare as computer speakers in a 2.0 setup?

I would say the P142/P143 would be weak for a 2.0 setup, very little bass response. I would go for 2.1 with those speakers
P162 is fine for 2.0 setup.

Minimum P15x series for 2.0 I'd say.

Agreed, I have p143's for a 2.1 setup, and not quite enough bass.

FYI to anyone on the fence with these speakers. They're good entry level speakers, I would put them ahead of Polk Monitor low-end offerings, the finish is also very nice. Been using my P162 w/ PS12 since 2008

If you don't buy them now don't fret, they have perpetual sales every other month pretty much on the entire line of Primus.
I would recommend not buying a Primus subwoofer though, as you can find better deals in other brands (especially in the states).
