[Staples] Late 2013 15.4" Retina MacBook Pro for $1799

The base model 2013 15" rMBP is on clearance at Staples for $1799, in store and online. This is a $300 savings over the 2014 model which has an insignificant clock speed increase, and 16GB of RAM rather than 8GB.

Great deal if you're in the market for an rMBP and don't need 16GB of RAM.

those who shell out $1800 for a $1000 laptop NEED 16GB of RAM, because they NEED the best, or, at least they think they do.

Why exactly is it a $1,000 laptop? MacBook Pros have consistently shown to be at the top of every laptop rating guide. Sometimes you need to pay a little more for the best

Oy Vey! Check your stats man... People love to crap on Apple before actually doing a fair comparison. The closest thing from Dell, with the same CPU and weight is an M3800 for $2091.60 and it only has a 1920x1080 screen and it looks like crap. Mind you, it has a 500G SSD instead of 256G so maybe knock off $100 for that - $1991.60.

Prove me wrong! Find me the following for $1000
Quad i7 2.0Ghz boost to 3.2
8G RAM
256G SSD
15.4" 2880x1800 Display
720p Camera
802.11 AC Wifi
HDMI output
2.02Kg (4.46lb) or less
New with warranty

If you could, make it look good so it's something I'd want to carry around. Good luck!!!

What $1000 laptop has a 2880-by-1800 resolution?

The base model Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro has a 13.3" 3200 x 1800 display and is under $1000. That's with an i3 though. The i7 model is about $1700, right in the same ballpark as the MBP being discussed.

I think best competition to this laptop is probably this
lenovo-y50-ultra-hd-gaming-laptop-1531271/

y50 being cheaper ($1499.99) though has some tradeoffs, good and bad:
+ better gpu (860m 2gb apparently)
+ larger resolution (2160p vs 1800p)
+ more ram (16gb vs 8gb)
+ everything isn't soldered on and some hardware can be swapped
+ cheaper i guess

= windows 8 machine
= touch-screen laptop

- not an IPS
- cheaper frame
- lower battery runtime
- heavier by a couple grams (roughly 400g based on spec sheets)

reviews on both

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Ide ... 215.0.html
(keep in mind their test model was 1080p and not using solid state)

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Apple-MacB ... 330.0.html
(keep in mind their test model has a dedicated gpu and more ram)

edit: also the post above me mentioned the yoga 2 which is also p good as an option and is definitely closer to the MBP in specs i guess.

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/le ... top-2-pro/

right now it's $1449 with site coupon

+ convertible
+ bigger SSD
+ cheaper
+ lighter (1.398 kg)

= smaller physical screen (13.3" vs 15.4")

- slower dual core w/weaker gpu vs quad core
- battery life weaker

review for the yoga 2 pro

PenTile RGBW display messes with font rendering and the contrast ratio of 500:1 is unusable, and that's a dual core i7 in the flagship model not a quad. Not even remotely comparable to the rMBP.

Umm 400g is like a pound heavier. I own a mac but am far from an apple fanatic. But when comparing all specs and resale value I saw mac as the better value, although higher price entry point perhaps.

Why is it that anytime there's a deal on MacBooks, people come into the thread and start comparing it to Windows machines.

Better yet, why do Windows fans even come into threads about MacBooks?

As a MacBook user you won't find me in a windows thread because most of us don't give a damn about windows.

I've been a Windows guy most of my life. I'm also a software engineer (and not just working on web pages), so I'm using the computers for a lot more than just browsing and e-mail. I always thought Apple was overpriced, but decided to find out what all the fuss was about.

I have to say that my retina MBP is the best laptop I have ever owned or used. It blows away my Sony VAIO by miles. The thing that sets apple apart, IMHO, is the build quality. You may get similar specs for a similar price, but it's not going to be as well-made or feel that way in your hands. This laptop is quiet and runs relatively cool, unlike many laptops I've used that are powerful, but have a super-noisy fan and/or are scalding hot when performing heavier tasks. Although I haven't used it as much as Windows, I have a very positive impression of OS X, especially after the missteps MS has taken with Windows 8.

Am I converting to Mac? No, in my world you'll always need both. They are expensive, but not unjustifiably so. If those Yoga books were as well-made and came with an OS that could actually take full advantage of the screen-res, then perhaps that would be my next purchase.

all of those fancy stats don't mean anything when it is running an integrated GPU.

always ask yourself this question before you buy a laptop:

what do i need it for?

if you do that, you will see that this laptop is flawed:

1, Do you need it for just surfing and school? then you don't need i7 (i3 will do) or 2880x1800 display.

2, Do you need it for gaming or anything that requires a dedicated GPU? well, iris pro is too weak for that.

the target market of apple is not people who understand computers, instead it is people who know nothing about computers but simply want THE BEST (just knowing i7 is better than i3, 2880x1800 is better than 1920x1080 does not make you computer savvy)

sad really.

I assume the retina marketing jargon just refers to the hdpi screen? Meh
The very first two replies in the thread are from the haters. Is that a new record? Either way, congrats.

That's ridiculous. There are so many tasks that benefit from having a high res screen that do no require a dGPU, anywhere from web dev to photo editing. Look at any mac forum and most of these machines are being used by professionals that don't need a dGPU.

Indeed, the guy has absolutely no clue what he's talking about.

My next machine will be Retina MacBook of some sort, likely with integrated GPU (albeit smaller than 15"). And even without absolute NEED of a Retina screen, a high quality Retina screen, with an OS that can properly support it, just looks way, way better. I have no need for a discrete GPU whatsoever.

BTW, I say that as an owner of both a non-Retina MacBook Pro, and a Windows 7 laptop.

jesus man give your head a shake this is an amazing machine and for $1800 its really good. It's the lower end one, yes so gaming wouldn't be great, but the one with the dedicated graphics is powerful enough for gaming and is used heavily in hollywood and the film industry for editing movies.

For god's sake a good chunk of Raid 2 was edited on the macbook pro with final cut... we're talking RAW video here!!!! You can hate apple all you want, but don't be completely stupid about it
