hard to find a deal at this time.. but use google flights and see what range it gives. but the best i found.. was July 13 to Aug 3 (Layover at PVG) for $1.1k with flight network or chinaeastern..
Other than that it was ..$1.6k upwards =/

Check flights through the US, they maybe cheaper but will have the hassle of a connection.

Time to use them if you have them, even better for last minute flights
I thought I would need to reserve the tickets well in advance if using points?

Booking well in advance lets you get exactly what you want. Sometimes they'res some availability last minute which can give you good value.(the airlines release some unsold inventory)

In this case there seems to be Aeroplan availability going to HKG but not returning back in August (unless you want to return at the end of July instead)

Best thing is to try to get your ticket from Montreal to HKG it's always cheaper but you have to take 5 hours bus. sometimes it's worth it :) Good luck!.

There's seats available on Aeroplan for even tomorrow in Premium economy for 62.5k one way, or 37.5k in economy on AC/UA on Friday....

Best time to use points, really

Do you have any ANY points to use? AMEX MR, Aeroplan, or Avios (CX)??

You can find 8+ seats on EVA YYZ-TPE-HKG 2 weeks out
True definition of last minute booking, and yes, best use of points really

Agreed - best use for Aeroplan is

1. Last minute travel
2. Stop over
3. Open jaw

Or the combination of those three :)

cheapest for early Aug is 1700 with Cathay, if paying by cash.

cheapest now is around 1500

seems the cheapest is to use Aeroplan pts if you have them

Yeah, cash is really expensive at the moment

If you have Aeroplan, you can fly one-way on United YYZ-EWR-HKG for 37.5k + $90 CAD taxes in mid July, and wait later for the return ticket
