Silencing my Abit Radeon 9550

I'm running a nice new SFF PC (Shuttle SN85G4V2) which is beautifully quiet at the lower fan speeds. However, my vid card (the R9550) has a annoying little whirring fan. What are the chances it'll run at acceptable temps without the fan? What if i underclock it? I don't use my system for games at all, so about the biggest workout my vidcard gets is DVDs or Photoshop.

Or if unplugging it altogether isn't an option, what's a decent replacement fan that's run very quiet? Keep in min i'm not looking to OC the GPU, just need a very quiet fan

The card doesn't get worked out at all. If it were me, I'd underclock it with ATITool and unplug the fan. Touch the heatsink periodically - if it's too hot to touch, it's too hot. You could also rig a silent case fan to blow over it somehow with twist-ties or what not.

How much underclocking do you think would be required as to avoid it getting too hot? Also, would it be better to remove the fan altogether rather than just unplugging it (to improve air circulation)?

Not sure, it's a trial & error kind of thing. Removing the fan would help, but I can't imagine it would make that much of a difference.
