I stopped using Costco cat litter. Mess and the fact I wanted a flushable litter that was environmentally friendly were the chief concerns. Switched to Feline Fresh, which is a 'sawdust' style litter that works great. Costs more, but worth it in my opinion. Had to go to a local pet shop to find it, as even places like Pet Smart don't sell it.

The two best litters I've used is Wood Stove Pellets from Home Depot. HD only carries one brand and it is the best wood pellets. I've tried pellets from other hardware stores (Home Hardware and Rona) with Rona being the worst smelling pellets of them all. Home Depots smells like natural wood (not pine) and doesn't track at all. It costs $5 for a 25kg bag. There's no fillers, chemicals, additives in the pellets, 100% natural wood. This is not a clumping litter, it turns into dense sawdust when any moisture hits. It covers up the urine smell excellent but not so much with feces. Clumping clay litter is much better for that. The best thing about this product is absolutely no dust. When you clean, just scoop the poop and you're good to go, no cleaning any urine. I change mine every 2 weeks for two cats because one of them is really picky when the litter is dirty. You can go 1 month on this for one cat.
Second best is a brand called Yesterday's News for an all natural, no dust litter. This is really expensive though and can rack up your pet budget quite a bit. It covers the urine smell well and feces smell ok.

Sorry to break it to you but Feline Fresh buys there stuff from Wood Stove Pellet manufacturers, you're overpaying big time. You can call Feline Fresh yourself and ask them or just read this.

Dust!!!!
DUST is right! You will take time off your life from enhaling this cheap product! 99% dust free my ***** ! Total false advertising. Stay away even if free!
I've actually emailed costco informing them of the loss if quality of this product. Its hazardous to the health of you and your pet.Last edited by RabidRich; Jan 22nd, 2012 at 07:31 PM.

This is the litter we use for our two cats.
Admittedly the dust free is not overly accurate but even most of the other clay ones that claim to be dust free are not. As long as you do not pour it into the litter bin from a foot above, you do not get much dust. Have watched kitties in bin and even with their kicking and so forth, the dust is not overly obvious.
Best value for the clay clumping variety even when not on sale.
As other poster said, kitties have covered litter bin down in basement landing and they get litter all over but not dust.
My biggest issue is that when it comes to vacuuming up clay litter (this is regardless of brand), is that it does basically disintegrate in the machine and makes a crapload of dust in our Bissell canister vacuum.Last edited by dibksbgon; Jan 22nd, 2012 at 09:08 PM.

+1. We use a lot of litter --> currently have 4 cats (occupational hazard of volunteering at the humane society), so we always have an interest in finding the best deals, and this is an awesome value even when not on sale. We've been using this Costco brand for years, and always buy about 6 months worth when it goes on sale. Never had a complaint until about 4 months ago when we bought our latest "batch" and noticed a HUGE difference! We even had one box still left over from before and the dust levels between the two were quite apparent. Some "new" boxes seem a bit worse than others, but it can literally fill the entire hallway (litter is at the bottom of our basement stairs) with dust for a few minutes when we fill the pans! It's ridiculous. I even compared the old and new boxes thinking maybe they'd changed the packaging from "99.9% dust free" to something less, like "95%" or something, but nope... no packaging change.
I still agree that it's the best VALUE for clumping clay litter, but it's certainly not as good as it used to be. I've also complained to costco about the decrease in quality.
Maybe I'll look in to the wood pellet suggestions. Seems like a possible alternative.

Did you happen to notice how much they were? What section, seasonal?
Previously I've purchased them at Rona, they seem harder to find around here. I don't remember exactly how much, think they were around 5-6 tops per bag.. maybe less
I converted 2 of three cat boxes to wood pellets tonight to see if they will take to the change easily.. hopefully they do!
And do you guys use hardwood or softwood, or does it matter?Last edited by redgrandam; Jan 23rd, 2012 at 02:14 AM.

I just bought a box this past week. And the very first thing I noticed was the amount of dust vs old product. Maybe costco got a bad batch? Would be sad if this is how the new product is as the price was great.

Horrible cat litter!!!!!
Literally turns to mush,a pain to clean and sticks to the scoop.
I believe that it's the dust that becomes mush......also not good for any living creatures lungs.
The litter I've had the most luck with is actually the Zellers one in a similar bulk box.
It's usually around $7 or so for around 12Kg's.

Something must have changed, because I've used this cat litter before and it wasn't that bad.

Great post! Thanked

I've been using Yesterday's News for 2,3 years. It's good but as you said it's pretty expensive for cat litter (reg. price at my pet store is $17 or $18 for 30lbs, which is a pretty big bag and lasts more than a month).
Will check out wood pellets the next time I'm at HD.

I've got two cats and this litter is works great compared to the stuff I used to get at PetSmart.
Weird, the only time I have problems with the dust from this litter is when filling the box.
Agreed, I've used a couple "cheap" brands and this one by far is the best cost/performer.
Same here.
I doubt it, the product is probably just that way now. Though, I've been using this stuff for a couple years now and haven't noticed any change... I'm usually really anal about noticing this kind of stuff too.

I have been using Simplicity cat litter from costco for about 4 years together with a Littermaid self cleaning litter box. I always buy a couple boxes when costco put them on sale.
I also notice the change. When I empty the bin every week, they used to be solid and clean. But my last box from Nov 2011, they are all mush and left bits and pieces in the box, which also sticks to the "claw" of the Littermaid.
I am now mixing 1/2 of this poor performance Simplicity with 1/2 Maxx Scoop Multi Cat clumping litter.

Sounds like what I get when my diabetic cat's sugar is high. Sticky pee is a sign of diabetes. Uncontrolled diabetics excrete sugar in their urine and diabetes is very common in cat's due to their high carb (dry food), species inappropriate diet. I have a diabetic cat and I can tell how controlled she is by the litter box. I use this litter too. If she eats certain food (higher carbs), I get clumps that don't form properly and stick to the scoop and box. When she eats right, I get nice clumps with no sticking. I just cleaned the box last night and had nice non-sticky clumps. You may want to get your cat checked out. Is he/she drinking more, eating more, losing weight? Changes in urine can also indicate other diseases. I'm not trying to alarm you, just suggesting you look into the possibility, as someone who has been there and who wished she figured it out earlier.
