Hey, I never really bought an iPhone when it came out nor did I even try to use one. I always used a plain phone. What kind of apps are there for the iPhone and does hacking it make it better?
There is an iPhone 4 coming out but it seems it will take some time before it can get hacked and I guess there would be some new security features that will make it harder to get hacked.
So I'm new to the smartphone thing, should I just buy a iPhone 3G since I rarely use the internet or social networking and I just need a good phone with some good apps to make life easier. This is more like a smartphone recommendation but it seems iPhone has a lot of apps and that is what makes it stand out. I will rarely use data with the exception of simple searches, email, maps, and checking my school work on my Ryerson blackboard.
What is a good smartphone to get now or wait for?

They've taken down the iPhone ads because they want to put up the new ones, but that's a good place to start if you want to get some basic info. Check youtube for iphone ads...
I'd say get the 4, wait for it. It works well for people who are used to it and new as well. Works with less issues than pretty much any other phone..._______________

Consider the Samsung Galaxy S if you can wait a bit. It is expected to be available on both the new networks and the incumbents.
First reason is that Samsung has the best hardware. For example, this phone uses a much better screen tech then the iPhone 4. Samsung has said that they will keep this screen tech for their own phones for 18 months before selling it to companies like Apple.
It uses Android which doesn't have quite as many apps as iPhone but it has a ton - enough that there is an app for everything you might want. And since Android is so much less restricted, the apps are much more imaginative, e.g. the beta of Swype for Android was just released - Apple would never allow this on the iPhone.
If you do go with the iPhone, make sure you get one that you can jail break. I assume that is what you mean when you say 'hacking'. iPhone users tell me that it makes a big difference.

When will the iPhone 4 and Galaxy S be released? I have to renew my Rogers account, so, these two phones is what I will be planning to buy.
I just found these prices for the iPhone in the US.
* iPhone 4 16GB: $199
* iPhone 4 32GB: $299
I guess I have to be willing to shell out at least $300 CDN after contract for either phone. Also, I'm hoping I won't have to buy another phone for three years if I get one of these.

@OP: if you like iPhone, you should go for 3G or 3GS. they are good enough for your daily needs. You wont need that much "smart" of the 4.

3Gs has all of the software capabilities of the 4G (I think) with the iOS upgrade.
4G has a slightly smaller form, 2 cameras (one facing you for wifi video conferencing) and a higher res screen (which for me is overkill). So I'd go for the 3Gs which was noticeably faster than the 3G in terms of response time.
I just updated my 3Gs with the iOS and expect I will stick with it unless Rogers offers me a cheap upgrade to the 4G (for less than I can sell my 3Gs for)_______________

if you ever travel, don't bother with the iphone, its a royal pain to unlock if at all and if you try, apple seems to brick it at will.
also depends if you want to watch videos or surf the web on your phone, if you do, just get an android that will work with a lot more pages.
if you just play games and wanna sync your itunes, get the iphone

Which OS is better, the Android OS 2.1 or the iOS4?
I saw the promo on the Galaxy S here http://galaxys.samsungmobile.com/ind...dex=1&ver=high and it looks pretty sweet.

Find a friend who's got a smartphone and convince them to let you play with it for like an hour. Try to get a bunch of them if you can help it and compare them. I spent an hour or two of my friend's time playing with teh Nexus One and loved it!
