Are managers at stores legally allowed to take your money if it's fake?
Or do they have to give it back to you for you to deal with?

They take It and you leave unless you want the cops to come.
I know this because someone I know works at a Timmies and people bring In fake $100 bills to buy a bagel..
He just notifies his manager and they take It and tell the person to leave or else!_______________LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked Jimboski for this post.

When I worked at BK, if it was $20 or less we just gave it back and said we couldn't accept it because it was fake. If it was larger we'd call the cops._______________

When my wife worked at Zellers when she was a student, they had to call the manager no matter what the denomination was. The police were called. The customer was allowed to leave or they could remain behind and discuss the issue with the police. They never got the fake money back though.

At my old workplace, cashier notifies their supervisor if they suspect it's counterfeit. Supervisor notifies security and they use different methods to determine if it's fake.
If they think it's fake, they'll keep it and give the customer a receipt indicating what/how much was confiscated. Report is written up and Police notified. Police then pick it up.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked Zephyr22b for this post.

I used to get fake bills back all the time when I'd get change from bartenders at clubs (usually $5 bills). I would just save them for the next time I went clubbing lolLOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked chickibum for this post.

I don't think retailers have any legal authority to confiscate currency real or fake. they have a right not to accept it, but not take it otherwise it'd be a pretty good racket.
I tried paying for my fried chicken on the weekend with a $10 bill. Cashier tells me its fake because it doesn't have the foil and he won't accept it. I tell him its not. I take my "fake" ten back and pay for my meal. Monday I take it to the bank, teller tells me its a real bill from 2000, and exchanges it for a newer one._______________

Same at Timmies. I paid for my coffee with a $5, and the cashier is looking at it all suspicious and tells me it's fake because it doesn't have a hologram. These bone heads need to be trained that the first batch of new bills didn't have holograms. Most have been taken out of circulation, but the occasional stripper who stashed it until recently and pulls one out back into circulation clearly causes a stir among the fast food joints...You better believe I took my 'fake' $5 back.Last edited by najibs; Dec 23rd, 2010 at 12:20 AM.
