Hi,
I had someone buy some concert tickets from me and he paid via Paypal. However, the name is for a woman who he claims is his mother, but they have different last names.
The address I see in the Paypal Email, is that automatically filled in so that I can at least assume it will go to that woman or can you enter any address if you are using a stolen account for example. The address is confirmed but account is unverified.
I'm reticent, it is so easy to get scammed via Paypal, any ideas as to how I could protect myself? I did search for the name of the woman in Canada 411, but am unable to locate her. As a matter of fact, there are 0 people of that last name in whitepages.ca or canada411.ca at all. I also Google the name and get 0 hits for that person...
Is there a way to reverse look up the name of someone who lives at a specific address?
What do you all think? It's raising a bit too many red flags to be comfortable, but I mean it's just like in Ebay, you can't prove that it's not a stolen account.

trust your instincts...if you're unsure..then don't do it...
treat paypal as credit card...you won't sell someone something when they uses' someone else's credit card...
i have to agree with yao...it's no suprised that someone's last name is different than their mom's..
you can't always search for someone's name on yellopage...411..etc..if they have their number unlisted..or it might be registered under someone else's name..LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked molala for this post.

You can try findaperson.canada-411.ca/reverse_address or www.whitepages.ca/reverse-lookup
If the shipping address is confirmed, it means that it matches the credit card billing address. I think 'unverified' just means that they haven't added a bank account to their paypal.Last edited by dynamic33; Jul 6th, 2008 at 12:45 PM.

I tried a reverse lookup and he does live at that address. I think I will call the number to ensure the mother agreed to him using the account.
Stoe, what about it sounds bad? I have bought items for people before so it technically was not my address on the account either._______________

More details are needed. Is this a RFD or eBay transaction? Price of the item? Buyer's feedback rating and score? Link to auction or buyer profile? Did the shipping method stated include a tracking number? (eg. not via Canada Post lettermail).
Paypal seller protection only requires a confirmed address (which means they absorb chargebacks if you have proof of delivery -- plus the signature option if it's over $325 CAD). It must say "Seller Protection Policy: Eligible" on the payment.
The seller is a newbie (with 20 ebay feedback) so he's just being extra cautious. Most likely it's legit, especially if it's a relatively low value item. Hopefully you're shipping to the terms on your auction to avoid negative feedback (if you don't want to ship to zero feedback buyers, you need to state so on your auctions ... though negative feedback from unresponsive unpaid buyers should be automatically removed according to the new recent feedback changes).LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked felix for this post.

A stolen PayPal account is generally the least of your worries, especially if it's confirmed. Since he has access to the account, he has no reason to use another name... he could've changed it to anything he likes if he went through the trouble of confirming another address.
