^ Rent one for a few days and see if you like it. I tried out a 14mm for a few days and found it a lot less useful / interesting than I had thought. 16mm is a sweet spot for me.

i have the a5000 with kit and am debating if I should get the rokinon 12mm. Mainly shooting landscape and architecture.
You're going to have to deal with distortion in post. Unless you like that effect.

What you'll lose after cropping in post will put you back up to 16mm.

12 is better for astro. Tilt Shift is the best for architecture. Landscapes work better with 16-24 and 130-200.

Just buy them used, and see if you like them. If not, re-sell them. If you lose any money by re-selling, it should be equivalent or less than renting the lens.

I once bought a lens for whale watching. Sold the lens after I came back from vacation. Made $50 by re-selling it.

batis and g-master are not exactly lenses you can easily find at rentals or even buy secondhand
maybe try a camera store

We come here looking for deals. We use the savings on the things we buy to justify buying more things, thus filling our homes with tons of unnecessary consumer products. Such is the key to happiness.

Henry's doesn't rent anymore. Vistek does but only the Calgary location has that 85 1.8 for rental.

You can also rent from the US from LensRentals.

Other option is Sony Pro Support, they'll lend you lenses to try for free before purchase. But to qualify for Pro Support you need two A7 bodies and 3 G Series or Zeiss lenses.

Your best option is to use Henry's. They don't have a cap on what you can buy and return. They used to in the past at $1400. So, just buy any lens, try it and return it if you don't like it.
Henrys Scarborough has them in stock, so you could head there if you want to try it in store, take your own body and pixel peep the results after at home.

The 100-400 GM is a really nice lens. Especially when paired with the 1.4 or 2 teleconverters. Its very light. It's on my order list for next month.

I think that lens and the 12-24 f/4 make a great travel kit. Maybe add a 85 1.8 for protraits.

The 100-400 is a very specific use lens, meant for wildlife, sports and landscapes (compression). But there is the rumoured 200-600 on its way out soon which will be better for BIF (birds in flight).

What's the reasoning for the 100-400? You're looking close to $3850 for that lens.

I didn't want to spend that much earlier this year and needed the 70-200 GM. So I ended up just buying the 70-200 GM and use the Sony 2X converter. That gives me a reach of 140-400mm at the same aperture of the 100-400.

Another option to consider is that you have APSc mode, which will give you more reach using just the centre of the sensor. On my R3, that gives me 18 Megapixels with a reach of 600 mm.

There is a service in Toronto called Lens Share (you can Google them). There is no storefront, you actually meet the owner at a pre-defined location to pick up and drop off the lens. It is well-run and the prices are reasonable.

Buying second-hand and then re-selling is also an option, if you are willing to put the time into it.

woohoo. Completed my base lens setup. Zeiss 55mm 1.8 and 70-200 2.8 GM

I purchased a 24-105mm F4 thinking it was versatile and sure why not, need an additional lens to the 55mm right? Came home with it, don't like it, no bokeh and too slow.

Future lens will be cool characteristic MF lenses. Focus peaking on A7 so fun to use.

Hey Rebel

I got hte 70-200 2.8GM

There's a whirling/grinding noise when powering up and down. Is this normal? I saw on DPreview some ppl report it as normal. Does any of your ultra zooms do this? Ppl say it's the OSS but I turned mine off and on, doesn't make a difference. Just making sure.

Mine is pretty quiet. Its my second copy. The first one was loud, rattled and had a dust in the front element, behind the glass.

The second copy is really sharp, quick to focus, and quiet.

Have you had a chance to use it in the field yet?

Guys how are you checking shutter count on your A7iii and a7riii. The existing online shutter count tool is not working at all. Other apps show count zero. Just to add I am not using silent shutter.

Hey thanks for info. I tested it, works perfectly. The friction noise is actually from the aperature blades opening and closing when I turn off/on camera. Not sure why the camera body tells the lens to close aperature when turned off. My 55mm 1.8 does the same thing....

All Sony lenses do that.

How much did you get the lens for?
