you can do all this and more with a PSP. But you will need to install custom firmware to enable this functionality.
you can even use it as a phone since it has skype built in! (only on the smaller psp2000, so don't buy a used one, unless your sure its the newer slim model)

Sony PSP?
Hey Guys,
I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but I'll ask it anyways as I'm sure someone can help me out.
I'm in the market for a new phone, PDA and light game console - just something to pass the time on the daily commute.
I was initially thinking of getting the iPhone, but I don't think I could stomach the data plan (whatever it may cost).
I saw a guy on the subway playing with the PSP...I've never actually used a PSP before, never really considered it for anything so here's my question: can I use the PSP to read PDF books, play games, surf the net, take notes and memos like a PDA, etc?
I know it doesn't have a built in phone so I'll probably just end up getting a plain phone and a PSP, but I just wanted to do a little more digging before I research more. Is the PSP end of life, is there a newer version coming out soon that I should wait for?Last edited by Starkicker; Jun 23rd, 2008 at 08:24 AM.

Typing on the PSP is a ***** but it can:
read comic books
play games
run emulators
read text files
Skype
watch videos
youtube
Google Map
Browser
listen to music
A DS might be a bit better, but I"m not a fan of it even though I have one. Like my PSP more.

If you are more inclined to the PDA functions.. then I will suggest an Axim. The X50v, and X51v can be had for as little as $100.. and they are amazing at movies, pictures, text, pda stuff, and games.
The PSP is a game console, and it is much better for game playing (control layout and a nice big screen).. but you can easily get used to play Doom on the Axim..

If you're considering the PSP for web surfing, you'll have to use wifi. In that case, you should just get an iPhone that can do wifi too for free. Its just EDGE/3G that is going to cost you.

Problem with the iphone is to get the 3g one, it looks like you'll have to sign up for an expensive data plan. Heck I want one too but I barely use my cell as it is, I can't justify an upgrade and I have my work berry for emergency surfing
PSP is a great games machine (once you factor in ScummVM and all the various emulators that run full speed on it with a hacked firmware of course). I can't imagine web surfing with the PSP unless you won't type (i.e. just read email and visit a bookmarked website). The browser is just too slow and the typing interface sucks bad. Even typing out web addresses are a major chore._______________
From a "Family" reviewer: "We Cheer teaches coordination, enticement to lust, women being used as sex objects, and team work."
From Worthy Playing: "We Cheer is, then, for all intents and purposes, the F-Zero GX of music games. It asks for so much, yet forgives so little. It is actually so casual that it's hardcore."

Yeah, the real question is if you can buy one and activate it later. Then you could just unlock it like the current gen iPhones. I don't know if they're going to allow this or not, but if so, it's your best option.
