Not sure what's up with the model numbers however it is a Philips. You can see the long (well what's much longer than JVC) name in the middle of the boombox and at the bottom of the remote.

You have to plug in an iPod to the USB port just like every other MP3 player... it's not called an iSoundmachine. Why should iPods keep getting special treatment!?

If I had to guess I'd say it rips MP3s only at 128 kbps:

Good catch however I (hope) that they're just using such a low bitrate so they can claim to the average user how much they can get on their device and (hopefully) you'd be able to up the bit rate with the remote.
