Not sure what's up with the model numbers however it is a Philips. You can see the long (well what's much longer than JVC) name in the middle of the boombox and at the bottom of the remote.

just by looking at it, it seems as though it's missing a dock for an iPOD.

You have to plug in an iPod to the USB port just like every other MP3 player... it's not called an iSoundmachine. Why should iPods keep getting special treatment!? ;)

A "boombox" with 2 x 1.0 Watt RMS speakers? More like a "fizzlebox"...

If I had to guess I'd say it rips MP3s only at 128 kbps:
MP3 is a revolutionary compression technology by which
large digital music files can be made up to 10 times
smaller without radically degrading their audio quality. A
singe CD can store up to 10 hrs of music.
MP3 has
become the standard audio compression format, allowing
quick and easy audio file transfer. Windows Media Audio
(WMA) is a highly compressed digital audio format from
Microsoft that delivers great sound with music files that
take up half the disk space and download in half the time.
A single CD can store up to 20 hours of good quality
WMA music recorded at a bit rate of 64 Kbps.
Edit: found a flash-based product photo that you can zoom in on:

Good catch however I (hope) that they're just using such a low bitrate so they can claim to the average user how much they can get on their device and (hopefully) you'd be able to up the bit rate with the remote.
