How come PETROCANADA can still offer it when all other Rogers MVNO have revised their offerings?NoseyBonk wrote: ↑http://mobility.petro-canada.ca/en/features/380.aspx
PETROCANADA STILL HAS ULIMITED DATA!!!!!!!
$5 SIMS!!! Get it while its hot!
EDIT:
Effective summer 2013, the unlimited mobile web browsing plan will be discontinued. We are working on new plans so keep checking back! More information will be available at the beginning of September.

If they could offer 500mb for $15 as a standalone add on I would get that but that pricing only exists with a plan. I'm not someone who calls or uses SMS much since there are IM apps

to be honest, I think that they updated every system 1 at a time as ZTAR owns those 3 MVNO brands, so I guess Petro will be last...alanbrenton wrote: ↑How come PETROCANADA can still offer it when all other Rogers MVNO have revised their offerings?

I dont think they removed the Unlimited data from your line as yet... Good2Go stated taht you will have it until November and when it expires in November that it will be removed....gr8dlr wrote: ↑Let the revolt being!!!!
Just looked at my data usage on my Nexus 4...with pretty limited usage, I'm at 33.31mb for Oct 1-7. Which means I would hit 100 mb at the third week.
Going to have to move my service now to Cityfone (perhaps...need to research) which seems to have "sharing" plans which I can live with [at equivalent to $12.50pp for 250mb].
500 MB of Data3 Share for Smartphones or BlackBerry®
Email, Internet, Social Networking, Instant Messaging, Download Apps and GPS
$25
I just disabled my mobile DATA....and added a Toggle to my Widgetzoid widget.
now, as for disable data.. you have to do a bit more than that,,,
Root the Phone
Remove bloat Apps
Download the DroidWall (firewall) Application and deny ALL apps and only enable the ones you want (Black list)
This is the only way you can be sure that data is used ONLY when you want it to.
Also if you have never used Opera Mini, now is the time... (OPERA MINI) not opera mobile

Seems like the tablet plans are the next best options for those wanting cheaper data.
I rarely use my cellphone (I usually have access to a landline in the office) to the point that when we had a Rogers Pay As You Go, my balances were reaching $200-300 so I just sold it prior to the expiration date.

so unchecking "Data enabled" and unchecking "Data roaming" under "Mobile Network settings" won't stop the flow of data?NoseyBonk wrote: ↑I dont think they removed the Unlimited data from your line as yet... So if staying with 7/11 we may have to look at the $20plane + $15 add on for 500MB... That's $10 more than what I spend now with UMB.

Ah, so this is why my iphone has had "Rogers" instead of "Speakout" in the upper left corner for the past 3 days. I wish 200mb was the floor instead of 100, but the $20 plan with $15 data is just $5 more than my current $30 umb plan. If they stop the $125 for $100 topups, though, I will consider leaving. Frankly, I just hate getting the monthly bills from Telus, etc. I assume that the expiry date in Oct of my current value plan will be visible soon. I don't think they can just cancel it.

Yes it most certainly will, but that means if you ever need data one day, when you DO enable data it will be like opening a DAM... your data will be drained because every APp will be updating and system and what not.. you MUST Root and install Droid wall or any other Firewall.
And rogue apps sometimes use data for no reason, just to report back home to the mother ship.
I feel much better knowing that data is only used when I have an App open, sthi also stops Google from tracking you.

That's my conclusion. We now have three options:
1. $10/month data add on for 100MB
2. $20 plan plus $15 data (=$35/month) for 500MB (plus all the other features of the plan)
3. $10/month data add on for 100MB plus 10¢/MB for 350MB total at $35/month
Option 2. seems best if you really need 500MB/month and/or use the cellphone/LD/text features. If you don't then your best bet is either 1. live with $10/100MB and set Android data quota accordingly or 3. go à la carte on data.
I think I can live with 1. at least for now. Even if I go over 100MB in the odd month it will cost less than a fixed $35/month for 2. And being able to get rid of proxies, VPN and related hacks is a nice bonus.

getting rid of proxy apps is the main reason I dont mind going with the $35 option.bylo wrote: ↑That's my conclusion. We now have three options:

Agreed it's a deal breaker but now it's gone. I can't imagine how it's like for users without interchangeable batteries..leonheartx wrote: ↑getting rid of proxy apps is the main reason I dont mind going with the $35 option.

Good analysis on cost breakdown. Did not notice the option for 10c/MB. Agree that option 1 with 3 in mind may work the best.

If you had android 4.0 + you did not need proxy in any way. And a little battery life for unlimited data was a no-brainer. The only people complaining are the ones using VOIP and Streaming all day long...
I had 3 Phones, LG optimus one, Samsung Galaxy 1 and now an Android 4, the 2 older ones were 2.3 and they needed the proxy app...

What are the odds the current plan you are on will be grand-fathered until you change?
Today was my renewal date and still on the 100min/SMS/UMB. Still need proxies for certain apps, but SpeedTest results are 5.65 Down / .93 Up, so not regular data but the throttled speeds seem to be gone.

Depends on the apps, I need a proxy for MLB At-Bat and TuneIn Radio (although most stations still don't work).

GOod2GO said that as long as you have the plan/data pack it will renew up to OCtober 31st, Starting November when the plan expires it will then be removed and you will be place on the Pay per use plans
I am expecting a text message anytime soon. We have not been notified of the changes and they require 30 days minimum. So,we can gather that from today we at least have 1 month left.

It's not only that. They're not always reliable (to put it mildly), especially for the free ones. I found myself spending an inordinate amount of time messing with them. Then there's performance, especially if you want to use VoIP to make calls.leonheartx wrote: ↑Those proxy/vpn apps completely destroy my battery!!
I'm also spoiled from when I travel overseas and get local SIMs. There I just plug in the SIM, set up a simple APN, and start enjoying data. VoIP works every time so I can call home for free using Fongo.
I'm hoping that SpeakOut's "data" will be full 3G so that Fongo, Google Voice, etc. work well enough that I won't need to pay 25¢/min for voice calls. (On à la carte data that pays for 2.5MB/min. I believe VoIP burns at a much lower rate so calls should be cheaper on data.)

This is why they removed it, people were using VOIP and streaming radio all day long... Not that I care but you cant complain about a funtion that was designed not to work with proxy. Anything worked, even Youtube streaming,,bylo wrote: ↑It's not only that. They're not always reliable (to put it mildly), especially for the free ones.
