so its actually wiser to use the miles for short hales in north america instead of long one say asia?? since short hauls only cost 15k miles and would cost $500 in real dollars, so with 75k i could get about 5 short hauls=$2500 dollars, but one ticket to asia is 75k miles=$1500 dollars??
i guess iam better off using the miles for short flights??
I would value most short hauls at only $300-350. You still have to pay taxes on each flight, so it could even be worth a little less. Your estimate of $1500 for a trans-pac sounds about right.
The best value comes from using the miles for int'l J class. A typical J class fare YYZ-SYD comes out to about $10,000. You'll use 100K for this 20 hour flight. J class for North America isn't worth it since most of the bus class seats on A319, A320, and domestic 767's only amount to 6-7" more legroom. Int'l configured bus class have a 55"-60" seat pitch.
on expedia.ca it says $6000 for j-class to china from ottawa... and for short hauls say ottawa-california its around $500 dollar

You'll find different prices for different cities. I used SYD as an example, since it's the most expensive and the longest flight where sitting in Y would be torture.
Ottawa-California is not a short haul.

I'm surprised this idea hasn't been implemented yet. With all the Safeway/A&P/PharmaPlus/ e.t.c. airmiles deals being posted in the hot deals section, I'm sure there would be enough material to warrant a seperate section on RFD.

If it hasn't come up in the past 3 years, then it isn't needed.

I was looking for more posts on airmiles deals, and came accross this thread. Like I said before with all the threads in hot deals about optimum/aeroplan/airmiles/hbc/ points that we could have a subsection dedicated to rewards points sort of like on frugalshopper.
