Specs and differences between PS2 and PS2 slim?
What are the differences between the regular older PS2 and the newer slimmer version? What is the output resolution of the PS2?
thanx,

the super old ones can't do progressive scan.
The newer models come with the network adapter built in as well as the ir sensor for a remote, I think.
The slim ones also pops open to load the disk, not like the older tray load systems.

the slim does not have hdd support.
Which means some games don't work for it (like FFXI)

Can the slim models be upgraded with a mod?
Or can you use the slim models with a USB HDD?
How many games require a HDD?
How do I know which of the FAT versions do progressive scan?

Is it worth it for me to search out an older FAT Playstation2? I just want to grab one to play some games on my widescreen since the consoles are reasonabley cheap now.
Should I just grab a Slim version new or try to find an older FAT version?

That's incorrect. All PS2 models support progressive scan GAMES, including older models. This is a misunderstanding that many people believe.
* Slim support progressive scan DVD play-back as well as progressive scan games. Fat supports progressive scan games only.
* Slim has network support built-in. Fat requires the purchase of a network adapter.
* Slim have IR sensors built-in. Most Fat requires IR sensor that plugs in, with the exception of v9-11 Fat, which also have IR sensors built-in.
* Slim can overheat due to the small casing.
* Fat support HDD with the use of a network adapter. Slim only supports USB external HDD add-on which is not worthwhile since the rates are USB 1.1 and most games will not work.
If you don't intend to use a HDD for games, go for the Slim. Otherwise, the choice is obvious.

Cool breakdown. I guess I will figure it out according to what I want to do.

I would just go with the new thin one. You don't want to chance getting a used fat one with a worn laser. I heard there was some sorta issue with the new silver slims vs the other black slims. Forget what it was exactly, but you should google that just so you know.

It's possible to add a HD with the slim, but it requires modding. Then you will either need a new case, or have a HD sticking out of the PS2 as there won't be any room inside the case for it.
Also, the slim versions are more likely to overheat as someone mentioned, and if you use anything above the standard controllers (basically things they would draw more power, dance pads seem to do this) you will get blown fuses as a result. I've had 2 fuses blown on mine (there are around a dozen in there), repairs can add up if you aren't able to do it yourself (soldering is really hard on the board, everythings really small).

Was given a PS2 slim for xmas. Not sure if I will keep it or trade it for games/accessories and get a Fat version.

The older fatty PS2 w/ the IR port CAN do pro-scan w/ movies. None of the others can except for games. Don't remember the model # sorry.

I don't care about progressive scan for dvd's. I have numerous interlaced and progressive dvd players and the interlaced players I run through an iScan HD+ de-interlacer/scaler. No need for progressive movies. I would like minimum widescreen progressive games, but no need for 720p. 480p widescreen is adequate. Seems like there is lots of stuff. I was thinking about grabbing a FAT but the slim is brand new and I can price match it down to the $109 on sale and it has a year warranty. How much to mod it to use a HDD? Is it worth it or should I just use memory cards?
