spray painting and pissed neighbours.
so i was painting something on my driveway today (regular canadian tire Spray paint) and i left it to dry, an hour later i come back for a second coat, my neighbor called me to the fence and told me that it smells and its bothering him, we are not good with these neighbors and they are always look for something to complain about.
I told him i would move to the back yard, but later on i remembered that he also did the same thing i did, he painted his whole patio furniture during the summer right beside the fence, it also smelled but we didnt complain. So my question is, am i breaking any bylaw? would he have a reason to call and complain to the city?

Complain about what?
You are painting something on your property!
He is SOL with his 'complaint' ...

I'd ignore him or remind him of his own painting.
Get it done before it gets too cold to do it.

he can call and be told he's SOL.
I myself have a cunning neighbour! What ever happened to good neighbours?

I find it odd that folks move into a neighbourhood for company then have huge fences to hide behind

I think as long as it's not being done on a continual basis (such as for a business) and you aren't getting overspray on his property you are fine. Just make sure it's not really windy, because if there is any overspray you'll be paying to clean his siding/stucco.

There are people who have environmental sensitivities and can be made very ill by the smells from paint etc. so don't outright dismiss complaints of this nature. However, since he previously sprayed paint, that doesn't appear to be the case here. You just need to be aware when you use these things around other people. It is probably better to do it in the backyard rather than your driveway.

He probably still would have complained if you had started in the back yard in the first place. Some people are just like that.
It is worth keeping in mind though if you have an overly sensitive neighbor to check wind direction first and try and do it on a day when the wind will not be blowing in their direction.

Just do whats you gots to do, and if he is around when doing so ask him how his spray painted furniture is holding up while finishing the job.

I have a neighbor like this and I had to seriously tell him off. Never had another problem with him since. If you ever back down from people like this you will always have issues.

I'd take a cunning neighbour instead of my c**t of a neighbour any day.
I had a pool build.. the city send me a letter once, stopped by twice, and so did the site super of the division currently being built.. Everything was done according to code but it's still a PITA I could have done without.
I can't wait until next summer when her %#^!@ dog barks begins barking all the time.
