Standard sizes for shipping boxes and mailers?

I have been dabbling around with online sales and would like to do more of it. I have found a couple of niches and will likely settle on one once I see what works the best. I find my biggest problem is shipping. I am bit far from "Chit Chats" but plan to use them once my sales increase. My other issue is finding appropriate packaging. For smaller flatter items I like to use padded envelopes. For larger Items I like to use boxes put into a poly mailer. The size shape and weight of my product varies based on my customers needs and I am constantly hunting for boxes or envelopes.

To make things easier, I would like to buy a supply of boxes, mailers, and bubble envelopes. Are there standards that Canada Post and US Post go buy? At what size/weight do shipping rates change? It seems like Amazon has a handle on things with their packaging. But they have negotiated their rates!

It would be great to have an idea so that if I am close to saving a few bucks by re-working packing I could do so.

Could anyone give me some advice?

I just visited Chit Chats office when I first started selling at ebay and tried those envelopes and boxes they had. So for now I'm selling baby products and using small 6 x 10 inch bubble envelope for an item less than 1 lb, which costs me around $4.30 to NY. I'm in Vancouver btw. For bigger item around 2.2 lbs in USPS mailing box costs me around $12 to NY.
