Hello fellow RFDers, wondering if anyone would be interested in a new Friends and Family offer that Star Choice has. Keep in mind this is only for new activations. The price for receivers are $49 for the DSR209, $79 for the DSR317, $99 for the DSR505 HD and $646 for the DVR530 HD. Plus theres a $75 programming credit applied to your first bill. So in the end the DSR209 is free plus credits and the DSR505 is $24 after the programming credit. Each additional receiver ordered is for the same price but only comes with a $25 programming credit, upto 3 extra receivers. So a 2nd DSR209 will cost you $24 after credits and a 2nd DSR505 will cost you $74 after credits. So if you're buying a DSR505 and a DSR209 its $148 plus taxes up front and you get $100 worth of credits on your first bill. There is also a $50 PPV coupon applied upon day of activation, valid for 90 days starting from the date of install. The coupon is good for 8regular or HD movies, not adult movies or special events. Installation is free, dish and upto 3 lines. If you want a 4th line for the 4th receiver its an extra $50. Keep in mind DVR530 needs 2 lines.

The price for the monthly programming does not have a discount, so its mainly a discount on the hardware. I know the monthly fees are higher than Bell, Rogers, etc. but its mainly for people who are looking to get another television provider and want a discount on the hardware. A few things I have to let you know before you sign up. You do need to stay with Star Choice for a full year after activation or else you have to return your equipment (no refund) and theres a $200 early disconnection fee. So don't sign up unless you think you can commit to a year. There is a 10 day satisfaction guarantee however, so you can cancel and return your equipment to get a full refund. Also, if you live out in the country and the installer needs to travel more than 75km they may have to charge you mileage fees. People who live in townhouses, condos and apartments must check if its possible to set up a dish, most of the time its not and the installer will ask for a letter before installing the dish. If you live in an apartment and you are allowed to set up a dish, make sure you are facing southeast or southwest. If they can't find a signal or its not possible to install, you'll get a refund.

The DVR530 isn't that great a deal since it was just on sale a month ago with a $250 credit. So the main draw is really the DSR505 HD receiver for $24 after credits and all. Yes the DVR is expensive, I don't have control over that, sorry.

So the name has changed, now called Shaw Direct, the offer remains the same except for the PVR which dropped to $499.00 this June. So its $424 after the initial $75 programming credit.

I've hooked up only a couple of RFD people only. Seems not much interest. But promo is still active if anyone is interested. PM if you have any questions.

Also if anyone is interested in getting any Shaw Friends and Family offers, I can get someone from Shaw to contact you regarding the current Friends and Family offer. The promo's change quite a bit so I don't have any info since I work for the sister company Shaw Direct previously Star Choice. But if they give you an offer that you don't like you can always say "No thank you" to the outbound person and hang up. Shaw products (cable tv, internet, home phone) are only available to Western Canada customers and Thunder Bay region in Ontario. One thing I noticed is that it also varies quite a bit by region. Other regions like BC that have more competition have better offers than Manitoba.

I got this offer a few years back and I've been very happy with the service and what I get for the price. Definitely beats the offers that Bell and Rogers have, AND NO (OR FEW) CONTRACTS!

On a side note, if you're a Shaw employee, I would be careful what you post in this thread or even in this forum in general on this topic. There used to be a HUGE thread in Hot Deals that was dedicated solely to this offer. RFD had to delete it due to threats from Shaw and a number of Shaw employees lost their jobs as they weren't allowed to solicit this offer on forums/websites, only door-to-door.
