Obviously to you nobody ever goes to Starbucks on their own time.
Starbucks Rewards, Green and Gold combined, give you free syrup or free soy milk, free refills on drip coffee or tea while still in-store, free drink with the purchase of a pound of beans, free drink after every 15 drinks purchased, personalized card and free drink on your birthday. If you buy coffee every work day then that's a free drink every 3 weeks. If you don't buy coffee on a regular basis, it's still just 30 purchased drinks a year to maintain your gold status.
I don't remember how much a Starbucks tall coffee costs, but let's just say that it's $2. With a free drink after 15 drink purchases that's a 7% return assuming that you're getting the same size and order each time. 7% return is better than any rewards-laden credit card. In comparison, Tim Hortons, Second Cup, Country Style -- none of them even offer such a program. It must be said however if that you regularly go to Tim Hortons or any other specific store then you're probably not going to change your habits unless something really entices you to change. If you don't have a store preference then Starbucks and a registered card would benefit you.

Just an update, it worked. I'm now a gold card member, and I also have 4 free drink coupons waiting for me... all with under 2 hours of work! I'm cool.

wow that's ridiculous, I guarantee your story will spread like fire within that starbucks and then will spread towards all the Starbucks in the district, especially now they know your name, "THAT guy who buys one bean at a time" just to get free drinks. I'm surprised you didn't get a death stare by the customers in line, if there weren't any customers when you started, probably a line has formed by the end of the transaction

This seems more like a scam than anything.

so much judgement being passed on op. maybe he was bored, maybe he really likes free stuff but who cares, you don't have to do it. i really like this thread because it shows creativity, initiative and finding loopholes. i'm not going to personally go out and do it, but i enjoy reading about someone who did and got his prize.
you can't always apply a cost vs. time analysis to every single thing you do with your life.
