STB 2019 - DEPARTURE LOUNGE (a place to CHECK IN & hang out with other RFDers doing STB 2019)

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to the DEPARTURE LOUNGE

A place to kick back & relax and talk generally with other RFDers on how you are all doing in regards to the “Treasure Hunt” that the Shop The Block Event is.

You might want to start by CHECKING IN, so we have a rough idea of how many RFDers are ON BOARD for this BIG BONUS Event

Just give us a quick post to say Hi

But feel free to add more if you wish ...

What your Goals are in terms of Offers / Partners & BIG BONUS Miles
And even if you have long term plans for all the miles you are chasing

NOTE - The Lounge is not a place to ask OFFER Questions... the individual Offer Threads are for that
And GENERAL Questions about the Event itself ... they can be asked in the START HERE - STB 2019 Thread

This is the Departure Lounge ... a spot to spend a little time getting to know fellow AMs Collectors & RFD Buddies
.
.
.
I’ll get the ball rolling:

Plan on aiming for the 1200 BIG BONUS BAMs by doing at least 7 PARTNER COUNTS over the next 6 weeks

Live in Eastern Ontario, not too far from the Quebec Border... so have the advantage of being able to earn there too

Offers that I think are most doable / attractive

* BMO AMs MC (Spend $ 350 or $ 700 )
* SOBEYS (Spend $ 50+ )
* URBAN FRESH (Spend $ 50+)
* SHELL GAS (>25 Litre Fill Up )
* LCBO (Booze for the Holidays)
* REXALL (Spend $ 40+)
* AMShops (Spend $ 100+ = Xmas Shopping ... maybe an opportunity for STACKING or double dipping )
* JEAN COUTU (Spend $ 20+ )
* IGA QUEBEC

Anyhow ...
I am perhaps a bit disappointed with the MAX BB BAMs being 1200 vs 2000
But still lots of opportunities to earn in STB 2019
As well as many other ongoing AirMiles Promotions
So figure I will still make 10K in 2019

I'm very disappointed in the offers and BAM's only being 1200 this year. But since I live in the GTA most of these offers should be easy enough to complete through regular spends (or slight adjustments) so still going to participate. Planning on doing this x2 with my partner.

Targeting the following offers:
* BMO AMs MC (Spend $ 350 or $ 700 )
* SOBEYS (Spend $ 50+ )
* URBAN FRESH (Spend $ 50+)
* SHELL GAS (>25 Litre Fill Up )
* LCBO (Booze for the Holidays)
* REXALL (Spend $ 40+)
* AMShops (Spend $ 100+ at Amazon)

With the following as reserves as we may be traveling in December:
* Air Miles Hotels (Spend $100+ on hotels)
* Budget (Spend $75+ on rental)
* Global Pet Foods (Spend $50+ ... I usually do an annual donation to the Humane Society)

Just a reminder that, with the devaluation of the Big Bonus from 2000 to 1200 AMs, those of us doing Cash Miles are looking at just over $18 in Bonus AM per offer, down from $30 in previous years. This may help you decide whether or not an offer is worth doing FOR YOU.

So, for example, I don't much care for the LCBO offerings, but they were worth doing when I paid $13 and got $30 in AM. Now, not so much.
But for someone who's buying booze anyway, still worth doing.

Another example: BMO $350/$700 offer nets roughly $23 in AM at the $350 level (adding offer and 1/7 of Big Bonus AMs) for a 6.57% return - better than using Cobalt at Sobeys or Metro, so might be worth doing. But $700 nets roughly $28 in AM for a 4% return, so not worth it for me.

2 down 5 (or 6 for insurance) to go! LCBO and online purchase of $100 or more. Maybe 3 more tomorrow Shell, Sobey's and Jean Coutu.

Meh, looks like this year will be a bit of a bust. I (QC) can only spot 4 offers in total that I MIGHT be able to fulfill... and even those would require a departure from my usual spending habits:
  1. Jean Coutu - spend $20 for 3x miles
  2. IGA - spend $100+ on Nov 28-Dec 1 or Dec 12-15
  3. Shell - 5 bonus miles on 25L+
  4. AirMilesShops - 50 bonus for $100+ transaction
For a maximum return of 300 AMs, I probably won't bother. Not worth the effort.

You don’t have any cash miles to redeem? Thought Quebec would be the easy one. Redeem JC, IGA, Les Marches Tradition, rachellebery, spend $15 at IGA express, fill up 25L at Shell and a glue stick $7.37 at RenoDepot and you got yourself 7 offers and cost very little

No, I've never collected any cash miles in history. I redeem mine for ski lift tickets, generally, so I only ever collect Dream miles.

There's no IGA Express nearby, I don't really shop at Marche Tradition or Rachelle Bery, and I don't need any glue. Not worth it for the measly payout.

Joining in, I will be doing 7 offers on the household cards (3). Will spread it out over the promotion time frame so that I don't change my purchasing habits (just where I purchase things). Slow and steady will get me to the finish line.

Getting 3-5 partners should be super easy

For me at least:

Shell 25L $30 bonus 5 miles
Rona PL $7.90 bonus 20 miles
Lowe’s PL $7.90 bonus 20 miles
-You are probably buying gas no matter what so I’m not counting that as extra $ spent
-So $15.80 spent to get 345 miles (~$35)

LCBO rye $29 bonus 15 miles (or wines for $25)
Sobeys/foodland $50 bonus ~15 miles
-I don’t usually shop sobeys since everything is generally a premium so I would say $15 more spent over cheaper grocery store for same amount of food
-So 15+29=$44 extra spent for additional 530 miles bonus (~$55)

I was maybe thinking doing the miss fresh ($50) and wealthsimple ($500 “spent”) offers too as that’s 1000 miles for those 2 plus the extra 400 bonus for 7 offers (~$145)

My spouses should be super easy as she is not signed up for Samsung, surveys, or hudsons bay yet

Absolute cheapest way to get most miles for someone who has never done an air miles bonus promotion:

1 Samsung account (spend $0) bonus 100 miles
2 Rewarding opinions 3 surveys (spend $0) bonus 15 miles
3 Hudsons bay conversion (spend $0) bonus 30 miles
4 Shell 25L (spend ~$30) bonus 5 miles
5 Rona PL (spend $7.90) bonus 20 miles
6 Lowe’s PL (spend $7.90) bonus 20 miles
7 LCBO wine (spend ~$26) bonus 15 miles

Total spent = ~$72
Total miles collected = 1405 (~$145)
Profit = $73 worth and you have wine/gas/pl premium

Notes:
-You are probably buying gas no matter what, so I don’t really count that $30 as “extra” spending...

For those that can’t do the first 3 free offers here are next cheapest options:

8 Metro catering (spend $25) bonus 50 miles
9 Rexall (spend $40) bonus 20 miles
10 Sobeys (spend $50) bonus ~15 miles
11 Foodland (spend $50) bonus ~15 miles
12 Urban fresh (spend $50) bonus ~15 miles

Total spent = ~$72 (from 4,5,6,7) + $115 = ~$187
Total miles collected = 1345 (~$140)

Profit = $-47 and you have $26 of wine/$30 gas/$16 pl premium/$25 catered lunch/$40 worth of stuff from rexall/$50 worth of stuff from grocery store

Ran some errands tonight. Picked up the weekly lottery tickets at Shell, bought some Vodka and the Fleur du Cap combo at the LCBO, grabbed some of my groceries at the Foodland at Pape and Danforth and the rest at the Sobeys on Laird. Four down in one night, three to go. I live beside a Sobeys Urban Fresh and Rexall hasn't started yet. Will almost certainly buy something at airmilesshops.ca and if that fails I can buy the adhesive at Lowe's or Rona for a few dollars and donate it to a construction minded person.

One thing to note - I went to the LCBO at Summerhill and stock was looking thin on the STB items. Check in advance if your LCBO has your intended purchases in stock before making the trip.

This is going to be tough for me (BC).

1. Shell buy $10 lottery (5 BAM)
2. Rona PL $8 (20 BAM)
3. Lowe’s PL $8 (20 BAM)
4. Rexall $40+ (20 BAM) ??
5. Amazon $100+ (50 BAM) ??

Except I have absolutely no use for the adhesive so will be giving them away... and I might not find $40 worth of things to buy on Rexall or $100 to buy on Amazon...

Sadly I forgot that Budget and Groupon are part of Shop the Blocks, and we already booked for our rental car and hotel... the cancellation fee for Budget is $50, while our hotel is now fully booked, so it's not worthwhile to cancel and rebook via Shoptheblock.

Do keep in mind that Lowes/Rona's offer ends on Nov 27. So I plan to buy both of them and if I decide to give up on STB this round I'll refund them later.

For BC residents, there is another free one, Rewarding your Opinions, in which you have to answer three online surveys.
There is also Wealthsimple, which will pay you, instead of cost you. (If you have a spare $500!) Make sure you use the link from Shop the Block.
