Strange groupon thing?

Wondering if anyone here that uses Groupon has noticed that when you type in the url groupon.ca, before getting to the mainpage, you're directed to a site url of

which then redirects you to the regular Groupon page.. there's nothing to notice except the change of URL in the address bar, this web address loads nothing as far as I can tell.

What's this about? I don't really like the idea of being pushed to a website I have no will to visit, and it makes me suspicious of what data might be being collected by sketchy-sounding third parties. Has anyone noticed the same thing?

edit: There's more info on the stealthily-redirected site here: http://socialmindset.com/portfolio/guide-on-dating . I know marketing and info collection are a part of these businesses, but it just seems really clunky

I've never used groupon.CA ... I only use groupon.COM

Pulling up the WHOIS data for .ca site pulls up nothing (ie: VERY lax on details), but for .com it pulls up everything for Groupon, Inc. I'm thinking it's some third party just trying to cash in on those thinking that .ca is the actual site.

Ahh.. well that does make a difference if I go to groupon.com, thanks. I'll make sure that's bookmarked.

FWIW, after being redirected when typing groupon.ca, the Groupon landing page I end up at is for the URL:

"http://www.groupon.com/ottawa/?utm_camp ... source=rvs".

rather than groupon.com/ottawa. No idea what this actually means, but hey, there it is.. shadiness

What's basically happening is Groupon is doing some sort of marketing campaign and uses those link tags (utm_medium and utm_source) to see which campaigns work. What you ran into involving groupon.ca was someones idea of getting easy marketing money from groupon.

Lots of people will go to groupon.ca thinking that's the site, the marketer redirects you to "http://guideondating.socialmindset.com/grind-dance/" first and then to groupon.com so it appears as if you came from the marketers website instead of groupon.ca.
