Student Filing Taxes
Hi,
I'm a third year uni student living away from home.
My roommates have mentioned they file rent expense and get a refund for it.
Is this true and where would I file for it? Their parents do it so they arent sure.
I can't seem to find any info on the revenue Canada webpage about it.
anyone here know?

You can get a tax credit for your rent (and therefore a refund). Of course you have to have an income and have paid taxes last year to get a refund. Look in the provincial credits section for the spot to put in your rent. Students can claim $25 as a tax credit for student residence.

It's not really rent expense, but it's an Ontario Tax Credit, you put it in the same form 'property taxes' go under. Is this the first time you are filing a tax return?
Also, you will need the name of the landlord, the amount of rent paid from Jan 1 - Dec 31, 2006, and the location of the rented residence.
