Most big firms I've seen do full-time Aug-Nov and internships Nov-Jan. Some do joint information sessions but the application times usually differ.
The institution where I received my full time offer does recruiting for their summer positions at the same time. In fact, they've completed full time offers before making summer offers.

It is a rarity though. Maybe 1/10 firms?

My grades in 1st year are very average, and most companies look at your transcript....

That's basically guaranteed me not getting internship?

Look at it this way.

University graduates are top 20% of educated Canadian adults.

Assuming 0-20%, average university graduates fall around the top 10% mark.

So I would look at top 10% of companies.
Check out caRpetbomBer's picks in this thread.

I have three Fs, one D, and eight Cs, six Bs, and two As on my transcript (67%) in my first two years and haven't had an issue securing full-time employment upon graduation.

My overall GPA is a B but my last two years I've killed it with As. (85%)

When speaking with recruiters they jokingly say, "Wow! It looks like my transcript." (TD Securities S&T). Another said they prefer to see a transcript like this, as it shows a person is extremely good in certain areas and terrible in others...rather than being mediocre at everything. (Scotia Commercial).

So there is still hope!

Unless your school offers co-op, very few 1st year students can find some big time internship without serious industry connections.
