Definitely do it on your own. Sydney is compact, transportation excellent (despite what some locals may say) so it's built for independent travel.

Sydney, AU 1st time
Any tips, just have a week there. How to get around, should I get a tour or
independant travel? I'll be leaving next weekend last minute treat to myself.

By the way, since you will be there for a week, I highly recommend that you purchase a travelpass (preferably the green one) which is good for 1 week. Even if you will be in Sydney for about 4 days, it will pay for itself. It is valid on trains, ferry, and buses within the zone that you purchased. Green will allow you to hop on a ferry to Manly, which is highly recommended.
