Probably not the best lens out there - but for the price, you can't beat it. It'll beat any kit lens for sure

Tamron AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II Lens
For Nikon AF-D Mount

Lenses are designed for exclusive use on digital cameras with smaller-size imagers and inherit all of the benefits of our Di products. These lenses are not designed for conventional cameras and digital cameras with image sensors larger than 24mm x 16mm.

At Tamron, our quest has always been to make the ideal zoom lens. As a result of this ongoing challenge, we have introduced the concept of our high-power zoom lens in the new AF18-200mm XR Di II for exclusive use with digital SLRs. Tamron's original development of proprietary core technologies such as Aspherical element production, Multiple Cam Mechanism and Integrated Focus Cam design lend to the creation of the world's lightest, most compact 11.1X zoom lens made for digital SLR cameras.

The 18-200mm (28-300 when converted to 35mm) provides the digital photographer with the versatility of a true wide to ultra tele zoom in an amazingly easy to use design.

Please Note: This lens is for Nikon AF-D Lens Mount. Only manual focus with Nikon D40, D60 and D5000 bodies.

I'd argue that Nikons 18-70 it is a better lens, but to each is her own.

I have the Nikon 18-200. There is no comparison (cost included). I'm not a believer in cheap optics.

This will turn into the last thread with all the naysayers crapping on this lens explaining how for more money you can buy a better lens. Well no kidding. It suits me fine though. Matches with my D50 well. It's a nice economical Made in Japan piece of glass which is miles better than the Made in Thailand kit 18-55 lens. Between my wife and I we probably average 500+ pics a week on the camera. It's not in the budget to spend big $$ on glass, if you are in the same boat pick up this lens.

My flame suit is on because the camera snobs that seem to be all over RFD are going to tell me that I'm wrong.

Sounds like a good deal. I'm still surprised the D5000 has no internal motor. But a decent deal for an "all round lens"

You are so right. Too many people are too absorbed in the technological side and not enough on the end: taking a beautiful picture.

so this lens only works with the D40, D60 and D5000?

No. Because this lens doesn't have the motor, the lens will not autofocus on the D40, D60 or D5000. (ie. Manual only)

On models like the D80, D90, D70 and D50 etc... it will work as it should with autofocus and all.

The best way to tell if Nikkor lens will autofocus on D40/D40x/D60/D5000:

AF-S = will autofocus
No AF-S = manual focus only

yeah repost. I had a hard to deciding whether to get this but then there's no vibration reduction function (or VC for Tamrons) and that's a deal killer for me. I have shaky hands.

Why does Aden never have these kinds of sales for Canon mounts?

its a very good price since its selling for $619.99 at Henry's... and they have it as a special order item (which they do not stock), so if you buy it at Henry's they'll just run over to Aden for $249 and sell it to you at full pop...
