My new construction home comes with a 50 gallon tank rental from Reliance at approx $25 a month. it's a perpetual rent, in the builder's purchase contract, 5yr term mandatory. If I take the unit out and drop it off to them I can get out of the deal for $400.
So I really would like to go tankless but based on a family of 4 running 2 showers at once, I would need a higher flow unit. I have been told to look at around $1500 for a decent unit from HD, plus my plumber will do an install for $125.
That math puts the tankless potentially out of my price range. And retrofit rebates i think are done now.
Any info on rebates that can still be accessed? I hear about rebates from suppliers, I can check with Union Gas but the rebate from gas suppliers is normally nullified because of the markup on their equipment and install.
any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

To revive this thread - I'm looking to purchase and install a tankless for a house in Kitchener-Waterloo area, and still debating between the condensing models from Navien vs Rinnai.
Navien seems to be newer on the Canadian market and is manufactured in California USA while Rinnai has a more established customer base and is made in Japan.
Navien can work with PVC venting and looks like a bulkier unit whereas Rinnai works with stainless steel venting and is more compact. I also heard about some issues with Navien in regards to that flow sensor - not kicking in when it should due to getting clogged or something. Also Navien looks better specs-wise, but who knows if that's only on paper (i.e. 98% efficiency rate).
When I also looked on Navien America's website, I can't find authorized dealers/installers for Canada but for Rinnai I can.
What do you guys think?
