Someone correct me if I am wrong (I could be way off), but I don't believe that company pension plans and matching is a true percentage of gross pay. I believe it factors in CPP contributions. Say the CCP contributions max out at $2,200 and you have a salary of $80,000 and 10% pension contribution/match - the true pension contribution is actually ($80,000 X 10%) - $2,200 = $5,800.

Mine have always been off of Gross for RPP and matching for RRSP or SP is done based on your contribution and my contribution has always been a percentage of Gross.

Then there is union dues and pension that is also deducted(pension goes back so its not much of a biggie). So what percentage of the overall cheque actually ends up in pocket? If all teachers were making 94k(straight to pockets), I think that they would be living a lot more flashier than they are?(My HS teachers weren't flashy and I currently work with a bunch of teachers and they seem to be very middle-income)
They are not flashy as 94k for a 35-40 year old is not a lot once you consider mortgage, kids (esp daycare) etc...

I make 70k. I take home 3700 monthly, so a huge chunk goes towards CPP, tax, union dues, pension etc. I don't mind. I am 30 and I will top out the pay scale by the time I am 37.

And can line up for EI along with the plethora of other new grads over the recent 7 or so years.
As much as I do think some of them are overpaid, it is not too lucrative when you cannot even get a job (partly because of the crappiness of retirees grabbing a lot of the substitute work and partly but mainly because there are too many bloody graduates). Teaching can be great if you are working full-time and in the system, but just go pop over to the other teaching thread for the school boards and you can see people are clammering just to find to substitute work.

Teaching is a government job and likewise, it's great when you get into the system and full-time.

I was wondering if anyone knew specifics about the Catholic School Board and hiring only Catholics.
As a prospective teacher, I want to maximize my job opportunities and thus plan to apply to the Catholic and public boards.
I am Catholic - attended mass regularly as a child, went to Catholic elementry and Secondary school; however, into my teens I stopped going to mass.
I do not really want to start going to mass regularly again (which I understand is a major distinction of Catholicism), because I pretty much have the entire mass memorized and have heard the stories hundreds of times.
I was wondering if it would help me to get a job at with the Catholic board if I went to teacher's college at a school affiliated with the Catholic Church - say King's in London or ________ Catholic University?
Does anyone know if this would replace (and maybe supercede) any letter from a parish priest?
