if I only plan to sign for the 10 mb service after the promo does it matter to get the 475 over 425 modem. I'm a fairly light user with browsing and netflix. No downloading movies or anything. This deal sounds good. Although I still have my previous rogers modem from before and its on the approved list. I think its the Webster 2102 or something like that and about 3-4 years old. Thanks for any advice. I'm with Bell now and am canceling them. Found their DSL inconsistent but my rogers before was solid.

Exactly same situation as you. Was on rogers before for a very long time, switched to bell with the 4 month grab and go kit, got lured in for another year, cancelling them cause their service is really crap. Switching to teksavvy in october. Also have the webstar modem that i own when used with rogers.
I think im going to skip on this deal since i won't be able to cancel bell until late october anyways. Maybe something else will come up.

Horrible modem, which is $44.95 on Amazon.com BTW. I think you'd be better off scouting a 6120/6121 from eBay/other sites.
BTW, Amazon (where I got mine) still has the 6120 for $83 w/ free US shipping. Unfortunately, they can't ship it to Canukistan, probably because some greedy SOB scored exclusive distribution rights.
Finally, checking my invoice (I switched fro Robbers to Tek in May), the activation was $44.95, so for 1-bill, you get a $45 modem, $45 activation and $43 of service = $133 value, but you're stuck with a crappy D2 modem.

Does anyone have experience with downgrading their service after the first month? Not sure I would need such a fast service given my requirements.

Sorry, I made a mistake, it's not even a DOCSIS 2.0 modem, but actually a DOCSIS 1.0 device (the current standard is DOCSIS 3.0). Cap that with some terrible online reviews and I wouldn't touch this with a 10-foot pole.
Any self respecting modem buyer today should be demanding DOCSIS 3.0; even if you're not planning to go to a high-tier service. Robbers is already deploying DOCSIS 3.0 modems to its Express customers to ease congestion in some urban markets. Anyone stuck with a D1 modem will not have the option to use the addition three carriers per a D3 modem and may thus be subject to congestion in high internet traffic areas. At some point, service providers may force you off D1 to D2 or D3.
Bottom line is that if you're shelling out your own money on technology, I'd strongly advise getting something that will last a while, rather than an obsolete piece of junk that may have to be replaced in short order.

All those modems are DOCSIS 2.0 which supports up to 38mbps (50 in Europe). So as long as you won't need more than 38mbps no reason to go out of your way for a DOCSIS 3.0. By the time when you will need more (I am a heavy gamer and downloader, and I rarely get to max out my 25mbps) DOCSIS will be 3.0 standard, and standard price. But hey, if some people don't have the latest and best, even if it's going to take another several years to be viable (are you going to pay 100$/mth to have 50mbps with Shaw rather than 37 with Teksavy 25mbps?) they can't feel the houlier-than-thou attitude, that they so love of hanging on on forums.

Wonder if this offer is available to quebec residents. I know they have different pricing for their cable service in quebec. Here they are videotron reseller at almost identical prices, last i checked. $50/month for 300Gig is not bad. I pay videotron $90 for 7Mbps, unlimited. And I believe the "unlimited" won't be for long.

You already have a modem, you don't even need the service tier, you would end up just signing up for the lower tier, pay for activation and just use your old modem.
If you plan to get the lowest package then just pickup a moto D2 modem (SB5100/SB5101) its way more reliable (check the RCA reviews on the internet) and be bought for $20~$30 shipped on ebay.
How about downstream channel bonding for reliability and congestion avoidance ? I have moved from D2 to D3 and the upgrade (at any speed) is worthy it (IMHO). If you aren't willing to shell out the money for the upgrade at least don't pay needlessly for an outdated hardware and a meh unit at the best, given that you can get a WAY better D2 modem for so cheap used._______________

My roommates and I will be switching over to teksavvy come this September when we head back for class, there's 5 of us in the house and we just got fed up paying $50 on top of every bill for overage charge with Rogers.
The modem that comes with this $99.99 kit, is it adequate and will it be enough to work for up to 5 computers, and a few laptops and smartphones connected via wi-fi? We already have a Linksys E2000 router._______________Heatware
