None of tbaytel's HSPA sites are listed, including the HSPA only sites they put up, some of which date back to early 2011. In order to put up a site, you need approval from Industry Canada, so the HSPA sites have been "registered", but for some reason loxcel has not listed them.

Oh, so you guys know since i was unable to go with telus here I went to tbaytel for a lack of a better option since my rogers phone would stop working on the 31st if i did nothing according to tbaytel website.
They transferred my rogers pay-as-you-go balance and added $100 good for 365 days.
They charged me $25+tax for the simcard/account activation/number port which was fine since i was still +$55 after I had to unlock my telus prepaid phone for $20.Last edited by kev*; Dec 23rd, 2012 at 04:42 PM.

You made a wise choice, tbaytel's coverage and prepaid options blow the Big 3 out of the water.

Does anyone know if Rogers' 2G coverage in Thunder Bay actually went dark on Dec 31 as was warned on the Tbaytel website?

Rogers is no longer supporting 807 prepaid numbers as of Dec 31, 12. Tbaytel's website never said anything about 2G being shutdown on Dec 31.

Surprised you didn't sign up with Bell or Virgin's 50$ unlimited nationwide w/ 6gb plan. Is the coverage that bad?

No.
Rogers no longer supports 807 pay as you go numbers, but the towers are still active. If you're on Rogers, you can't activate minutes on your account. tbaytel offers you $100 bonus airtime credit for porting, you just need an HSPA compatible phone, if it's an existing Rogers phone, that works fine.Last edited by amace; Jan 18th, 2013 at 09:32 PM.

I don't expect they'll decommission them anytime soon. They're still used for roaming purposes, and for their existing 2G customers. (There are still a lot) Hell, Rogers still sells some 2G-only phones. It would make sense for tbaytel to absorb them as their own, but that won't happen. Rogers also has EDGE service active in Kenora still which is a big cottage area for people who live in Winnipeg (retired people with old phones). I don't see them deactivating those towers anytime soon either.
But if Rogers was serious about putting companies like Wind or MObi out of business, they'd think about phasing out GSM_______________

If only OP had waited a couple of weeks! Apparently Telus has now started offering local HSPA numbers in Thunder Bay.

Hmmm, that is certainly a change of events. Would have helped me decide a month ago - oh well.
As it turns out though I'm pretty happy with tbaytel for now. I'm prepaid so I haven't had to deal with any customer service issues.
Also the $100 credit when I transferred was cool since it is good for a full year.
The best part I'm finding out is that their prepaid texting packs don't seem to expire monthly so I can stretch my cash much further as I use text over voice 95% of the time.
Last month only cost me $8.75 including a $5.00 text pack and I still have 170 of my 250 texts left over. : )
A $10 / 2500 text pack will last me all year easily - I will have to top up with that when my balance expires.
